| Not about Zehen (my weim), but about Zuna (our Rhodesian Ridgeback). I figured you guys would be more help than the RR forum I belong to. Since we got Zuna she's had mucousy poop or mucousy diarrhea on and off. We've had her for a month now. For the last 4 days she's had diarrhea with a ton of mucous in it. Poor girl had been getting us up in the middle of the night to go. She's happy, alert, eating, drinking, playful- she just has to poops. I took her to the vet yesterday and she gave me so metronadizole for 7 days and said to try that. She ran another fecal, that was negative. She also treated her skin problems- ringworm and pyoderma. I told my vet what Zuna eats, Taste of the Wild, the pacific and high prairie mixed, and that she seems a little lanky and thin for a 12 week old puppy. My vet wasn't concerned about this. Anyway, last night after getting her first dose of her meds she pooped and it was diarrhea, like it had been. This morning it was solid but still had a ton of mucous in it. I guess maybe I'm not giving the medicine enough time to work. I'm worried about my little girl. Do you think it could be her diet? Or has anyone else had this happen before? |

A lot of raw feeders who believe in a natural diet will tell you that mucous in the stool means that the body is trying to excrete toxins. I have had single episodes very rarely and it just goes away on its own after 1 mucousy poop. If it were my dog, I'd take care of the ringworm and pyoderma and then just work on her overall health. All the meds she's getting is hard on her system. I would of course keep an eye on her stool and maybe run another fecal, they don't always catch things the first time.
Metronadizole or Flagyl is used mostly for giardia and IBD problems. Don't know about Ridgebacks but IBD is a immune system problem in Weims. Again, the whole thing with the other meds, her immune health would be something I'd address. Long term flagyl use is bad for the liver and can cuase serious side effects. If your vet is giving it to treat possible giardia, I'd try Panacur first. If IBD, there are natural ways to address it, if that is somethign you are open to. I personall liek to use nautral remedies before going to drugs, but taht is me. |

Could also be a pancreatic issue or some kind of malabsorption. I wouldn't freak out at first, but if she can't put on weight, seems hungry all the time, has a dull coat and skin issues, you might want to eventually look into it. Pancreatic insufficiency is pretty easy to treat just by giving pancreatic enzymes with each meal. A blood test will diagnose it.
I'm sorry you've had so much trouble with her!

| Zuna's poop was just a little soft this evening, no mucous!!!!! =) I'm going to try to find a food that has a little less protein and fat for her little digestive system, or mix in more of the pacific formula Taste of the wild. I haven't decided yet. Zehen on the other hand had an upset stomach this afternoon... he's still going through his acting out stage- I left him at home today so he chewed up the corner of our futon! He had diarrhea with pieces of chewed up wooden futon in it. I think it's going to come down to crating him during the day for now. |

Have you considered that it could be a vaccine reaction? A Homeopathic Vet is probably your best bet as an allopathic one will dismiss the possibility.
Mucousy poo usually indicates colitis which is best sorted by finding out what food suits best and doesn't irritate.
I would try her on chicken or white fish and rice or potato with a little natural plain yoghurt for a few days, consider feeding raw or at least real food and then gradually introduce whatever you decide on, sounds as if what she's having now is not suiting her.
Bach Crab Apple Flower Essence helps the body eliminate toxins.
Hope she's better soon, Reiki if she wants it. |

| Funny you should suggest a vaccine reaction. After her second set of shots she seemed to have this diarrhea for a day or so. Then it went away- I figured it WAS a vaccine reaction. This time it has been some time since he last set of boosters, so I'm not sure. I found a pet store in our area that carries all the good food, I'm going in today to see if I can find a food that has less protein and fat for her little belly. In the mean time I started mixing in a little more of the pacific stream Taste of the Wild to cut the protein and fat down. Zehen does really well on the Taste of the Wild, but not all puppies tummies are the same! |

Definitely sounds like a vaccine reaction - try to talk to a Homeopathic Vet, they can help the best, some will do so by phone or email. He doesn't need any more boosters, especially when he's already reacted badly, have a read at Jean Dodds site....
When looking for food, if you're sticking to commercial, you want one with no additives or preservatives, no meat "derivatives", you really need to read labels. Real food is of course best and you know what's in it. |
