| I took the kids everywhere with me today... they went to work with me and stayed in a crate in the back, went with me and my husband to drop my car off for an oil change and then we went to Petco. I got home this afternoon after all that and realized Zuna has a really bloated belly. I mean it's huge- soft, not hard, no pain, nothing else wrong. She inhaled her lunch today (1 1/2 cups) and Charlie said she inhaled her dinner. I went to a meeting for my other job and came home and she looked even bigger. She's pooped 4 times since I got off work at 1:30. All solid poops. She eats everything, so it's possible she's eaten something, but she's not lethargic, no pain, no vomiting, no diarrhea. Last fecal done two weeks ago was negative. She's on heartworm prevention so that should deworm her. Any ideas? I'm getting worried... I would call my vet after hours but she seems fine, she just has a huge belly (looks like she's carrying around a cantaloupe). Maybe she just has some gas? What can I give her? I work tomorrow, and they are coming with me again. If she isn't back to normal I will get the vet to look at her. |

| The belly is bloated by not hard? That is really strange. I honestly don't know what to tell you. If she's pooping she's not blocked. I would still be very concerned and if it were me I think I'd be off to the Vet. |

Well, I wouldn't take any chances at all. Bloat with torsion can be fatal very fast. Get her to the vet because if she is full of air she could twist anytime and quickly.
If she is not twisted, they can easily get the air out of her belly. |

Poor girl! I hope that everything is okay, but I agree. I think calling the vet would be the safe bet.
Okay, all of you oldies on here....would pepto be good to give her to help if she has bloated out a little? |

| Not pepto, but some phazyme or gas x may help. |

| Gave her some Gas-X. She pooped again... time number 5 this evening. She's restless, but right now is laying down quietly. I'm watching still. I have a feeling we will be off to the emergency vet tonight. |

If she wasn't pooping, I would be super nervous.
Zuna
I really hope she's ok, keep us posted! |

Weimdawgs what is the ingredient in your gasx? As I'm a paranoid mum now and we have here a product called de gas which has 100mg of SIMETHICONE in it? just would like to keep something in the house just for my own piece of mind! |

Did you get to the vet? I lost my boy in the space of 1/12 hours from start to finish. I know just how fast this awful bloat can take our babies |

I'm w/ the others, I'd have been at the Vet hours ago. Having lost a Weim to bloat/torsion I won't take any chances. Once it starts, it happens very quickly.

Shortly after my last post she settled down on the couch next to me (I wouldn't let her out of my sight) and went to sleep. Poor girl kept farting- it smelt horrible. By the time I could finally go to bed at 11pm her belly was already starting to go down. I put her in bed with me- I woke up every hour or so to check on her. By about 1 am she was back to normal. I work today so I'm going to have the vet pull some blood on her and check her over. Ridgebacks do not bloat often (they aren't really deep chested dogs), so I'm worried that maybe something else is going on. She extra playful this morning, but as of 7am hasn't pooped.
The Gas-X (it was generic brand) I gave her had 180mg of Simecon (whatever that stuff is called...) in it. I think that was probablly a little too much, but it helped her.
After everyone on the Ridgeback board told me that bloating in Ridgebacks is few and far between I decided I wouldn't get the vet to do a gastropexy on her like I did Zehen- but I think after last night I've changed my mind! |
