What we know of Mayu’s story before she came to rescue is short. She was at a kill shelter and they were not going to keep her any longer.
So.. We began volunteering with Heartland last June. We said we could help with a variety of things, including fostering. We said that we preferred not to have a puppy (because they are sometimes the easiest to let go of) and that the dog would need to be cat friendly (we have 4 cats). About two weeks later I got an email… can you take this dog? She’s a puppy about 6 months old. (OK. That’s not so bad.) We don’t know how she is with cats – but we could move her if that doesn’t work. (OK. We should be able to work with that.) The shelter said she has some problem with her back and she needs to see a chiropractor. (Oh. Ok…?). They are going to put her down if we can’t pull her this weekend. (Well, why didn’t you say so!)
Off we go Saturday morning to get our first foster Weim! We ask for her. The lady went in the back and came out carrying this sweet dog. Explaining that Bethany (who is now Mayu), just has problems with the concrete floors… and walking in general. We’re thinking ‘How is this going to work. We have stairs all over.” We sign the papers, the lady carries her out to potty. Then picks her up, hands her to us and walks back in the building. We get in the car and I rode in the back with her… she had very little muscle control and she just slid off the seat… and turned and looked at me with those “I love you” eyes…. And for another two months, we told ourselves we were fostering her. Yes… Mayu is our ‘foster failure’.
She has been to vets to try and determine what is going on, if there is some treatment, surgery, anything we can do. She has: idiopathic neurological issues They don’t know if she was born this way, if there was illness, an accident or neglect. They don’t think it will get better or worse. She appears to be in no pain and thinks that she is normal. She was about 6 months old when she came here, and it was about 2 months after that before we even saw her try to sit. (Her back/hip/leg muscles were so tight) They thought she would not be able to go up and down stairs. Ha! She’s a champ at that now… well, they are still difficult for her, but for her she does great.
She was found as a stray with no tag or collar. She is a tiny Weimie, she was 6 months old and weighed 38 pounds. No muscle tone and could barely walk… and someone left her to fend for herself.
Now she’s a little taller and weighs about 43 pounds! On her most recent vet report, he said she is a “miracle child”… and she’s here to stay. |

here goes:
When I met Chris I was 16, he 21. We both had dogs. Apple was his dog he had from birth. He lived 19 yrs. When Apple died, a part of most everyone we knew went w/ him (We still get teary eyed talking about him 20 yrs later!) So 3 months after Apple went to the bridge, Chris moved into his grandparents place to take care of it. There was 1 rule. No dogs. Well, our second dating anniversary was coming up and he wanted a husky in the worst way. I adopted Casey for him She was a dobie-labX who became our "baby". She went to the bridge in 2003. We were devastated. After about 4 months Chris called me and told me he went to the shelter that afternoon. Didn't get out of the car, but it was a start to find a new furbaby. About 2 weeks, a zillion petfinder hits and 3 shelters later, we happened upon a purebred Weim. I was looking at another dog in the pen across from him. No id, no tags... Chris motioned for him to sit and sit he did! A trained purebred Weim!! we kept looking and came back to the Weim...this time he woofed and sat w/ no request! SO we asked thinking maybe it was a workers dog, she brought to work that day... "Oh, that's Blue. He's sweet, was dropped off yesterday" WHAT??!! So we ask to see him and he gave a full-court press... leaning, loving and listening to every command we tried. We fell hook line and sinker. Paid the nice lady 150 and went on our way! Did we know WEims? NOPE. When we got him home, we reaalized how freakin BIG he was and I actually got a call from his "owner" all lies.... anyway, the love affair began... through 11 bites, Bloat and more in his first six months we knew we'd never NOT have a Weim. He rescued us just when we needed it more than he did! |

I too carry the flunk gene! My intention was to keep Indy until a decision could be made about re-homing her. Cooper being an easy weim behavior-wise made us think we could easily do this. When she arrived she was extremely nervous, scarily under-weight (around 38 lbs @ 9 months) not eating, not kennel trained & as we later found out, suffering from a bladder infection.
The trouble was not only was she incredibly sweet & stunningly beautiful - so delicate, such a tiny little lady...she pulled our hearts out of our chests! But we had to prove our love to her - she counter-cruised (even SOS pads) ate flowers, magazines, toys, boxes, her bed, the couch!
She's now 50+ lbs, kennel trained, no counter-cruising & we have seen her change into a much more confident & happy dog. Plus, she brought her own little miracle with her in that getting her led to me trying raw food, which solved the digestive problems that had plagued Cooper.

next up... so about a year of living with and loving Blue boy, we decided we wanted to get another Weimie from a rescue to keep him young (he was 7.5) so we started our quest of meeting little gray girls. I contacted DVWC (Before we were TSWR) and went to meet a big ole girl. She and Blue were very aloof to each other and I thought she was mouthy. Also, I could tell her family really didnt want to give her up, so I called Julie and said thanks but nshe's not the one for us... BUT I still would love to be a part of your group.
Next up we met a puppy. She was ballistic and was too much for Blue! Her foster runs the other all-breed group I became involved with from that meeting.
Number three... I had applied to Nutmeg in CT to meet a girl named Ruley. No call back. Then it was the owner wanted to keep her in CT if possible. Then Kelley called me and said she'd consider us for her girl after hearing all we've been through w/ Blue and rescue in general so off we go... 3 hr drive. It hailed, rained and the dogs barley sniffed each other. We fell in ove with the daughter who I think thought they were getting Blue!
At the end of the visit, I got 1 tiny lick, like an after thought...Oh I'm supposed to get you to love me!
On the way home Chris thought Oh no, she's in rough shape, maybe not her either. I convinced him to let us go back in 2 weeks (after Easter0 to take her for a trial.... that was April 2005. She was NEVER going back there! After about a year and a half, it seems like they do like each other although there;s still scuffles but when one is gone the other mopes... Oh yeah and we instantly changed her name. Once we got her tag, everyone of our neighbors knew she was a part of our family!
She's definalty not the same temperment as Blue, but is loved just as much |

We got our Goose from a great breeder near Durham and it wasn't long before we were looking for a sibling for our boy. Lola came to us via Club K-9, our doggy daycare/camp/boarding. They knew we were looking for another fur baby and found a little girl at the SPCA while on vacation in Connecticut. They rented a car and drove her back to NC. Lola had recently had puppies and was covered in what appeared to be cigarette burns ( on her face, muzzle, neck, and back). She had been through at least 4 homes in year, was scared to death of men, and had the sweetest eyes I have ever seen! Goose spent some time with her at Club K-9 and fell in love; they have been inseparable ever since. It took her a while to feel comfortable around my husband, but now she is the biggest mush-dog ever! She loves to climb into our laps and nuzzle our necks, and she is the biggest sucker for a tummy rub ever! I can't imagine how anyone could ever have hurt this sweet girl.
By the way, I found this on Youtube. It makes me cry (but in a good way) every time I watch it! I hope the link is good:

OMG that video is so touching... When I feel like we are getting inundated @ TSWR, I think of all these cases... and the beautiful people who foster and nurse these babies back to the gorgeous creatures they truly are.
So many people I meet can't beleive all that I "do" for dogs and rescue. I feel 2 ways:
1> I wish I could do more...
2> There's no greater satisfaction for me than to help a helpless creature of God's like a dog...
Hug your babies a little harder today and let them know how loved they truly are! |
