Worried about Charlie.....

Postby mom2charlie » Thu May 06, 2010 12:47 pm

Last night Charlie had a bit of a strange episode. The whole thing probably lasted less than 5 minutes, but felt like an eternity. He had been crated for about an hour and a half while hubby and I went to dinner, and all seemed normal when we got home. He was full of energy and a bit crazy, so after a short training session we brought out his new Kong Wobbler. Well, he LOVED it, and played like a crazy boy until he emptied it. He started to settle in on the couch, but couldn't seem to get comfortable - flopping and throwing himself around. At one point, he almost seemed to be lightly panting. No drooling, no coughing though. Then he got up and laid down on the floor.....odd for him. Hubby and I got up and walked into the kitchen, Charlie followed, drank some water.....and was fine. Proceeded to go back to the couch and fall asleep, as if nothing had happened.....and was completely himself this morning. He's had a normal appetite and normal poops since then. Am I the overreacting, overprotective mom? Or should I be worried?

To me, it sounds like normal Weim behavior. As much as they love their creature comforts, sometimes Milo will get up off the sofa and move to the floor. They can just be fussy sometimes about their comfort and flop around until they find the spot they're happy with. You know your dog best so always trust your instincts. But it sounds ok to me.

Nina gets like this sometimes... she will go from sofa or sofa... spin around, sit down, get up, jump off, go to other sofa, trying sitting on the ottoman, get a drink, flop down behind the sofa, get up, etc. etc. etc. It has no correlation with her energy level at the time-- she can just be a nutter. I would not worry about it.

Bob just plops. Huge heaving plop. Not fussy about comfort. If he was human he would put on his shoes
with his socks all bunched up  .

Connie spins and digs and spins and changes her mind over and over. Very delicately. And it has to be perfect.
Slightly annoyed until she gets it right.

This pattern establishes itself when they are young. At least with mine. And doesn't change much over the years.

If it is rare and out of character to have strange behavior, it could be a little digestive upset. Listen for digestive gurgle sounds.
It is a good sign that things are working...
It is alarming when they are young and do odd things. Keep staring when this happens and look for signs of distress.
Actually i think that is what you are doing by mentioning it. sorry.
I would get familiar with all the signs of stomach upset, the warning signs of bloat. My sweet Lewie would do some odd
behavior similar to yours about once a month and probably more when we were not home...he was thought to be having mild
seizures but it was connected to bloat.
