Im sure it will but damn she can fart with the best of them. I got a 6 month old puppy and the owners were feeding her some crap from wal-mart so i switched to natural choice, for large breed puppy, flavor lamb meal and rice. (made sure it main ingredients were not corn or wheat) she gets 4 cups a day. 2 in the am and 2 in the pm. she loves it. is this good food and how long until she stops farting? thanks

Bad gas is a sign of food not agreeing with the dog. Going to a better quality food will probably help, but not if there is an ingredient in there that she does not do well on. It's an individual thing so you may need to experiement with different brands, keeping track of the ingredients.

Anne

PS - A 6 month old should not be on puppy food. Actually I don't even like puppy food in general for puppies, but it depends on the protein to fat ratios which is normally wrong in large breed puppy forumals.

LOL! My 3-month old farts while asleep underneath my desk. My girlfriend always blame on me but I know it's gotta be Goose that cut the cheese. I recently started feeding him the exact same kind of dog food -- Natural Choice Puppy Large Breed Lamb and Rice. I was told that was a good brand, but from the smell of his fart one would think otherwise.

Maybe it's the lamb and rice after all. When I fed him Natural Choice Puppy Control Growth Formula he never had gas.

GG-

If your dog has gas on one type of food and not the other, I'd go back to the old brand. Also look at the quality of stools. A healthy dog should not be farty and should have solid stools.

"I was told this is a good brand"

Good brands for who? Smile Point is, not all brands are good for all dogs. One should look at the ingredient list and then see how a dog does on the food.

This is an excellent site on dog feeding info. It will help you make decisions for YOUR dog.

Please note re puppy foods, esp large breed puppy foods!! Note the ratio of protein and fat! High protein is OK but should be balanced with appropriate fat, not low fat, high protein. Most manufacturers reduce fat to reduce caloriees to slow growth -- that is not the point! Unfortunately manufacturer's "dumb down" to pander to owners who erroneously feed too much in general. (People somehow tend to like roly poly puppies.) Feed high quality food, balanced correctly (ADULT FOOD) but feed less if puppy is getting fat (thereby growing too fat, thereby putting too much stress on joints)!

Sorry.... rant over.

Anne

Luna is 12 weeks old now and we're feeding just over 1 cup 3x a day - Solid Gold Wolf Cub. She has nice firm regular stools but also has a pretty raucous behind as well.

We just chalked it up to being a puppy?

Puppies should not be farty.
Try supplementing with yogurt/kefir/probiotics to get the gut flora going. If she's still farty, I'd try another food altho Solid Gold's food is good.

Anne-

Sounds like we have a problem then - we feed luna yogurt every day (a frozen puppy kong full or a huge heaping spoonful on her dinner) as well as pumpkin on her breakfast!

I would talk to our vet, but we are in the process of looking for a new one because we do not feel that our current vet is very knowledgable about Weims. We've got an e-mail in to the Northstar Weim Club for any reccomendations in our area....

You may have to try a few different brands before finding one that works. For instance, I have tried Innova EVO which has a great ingredient list, but my dogs do not do well on it. Sometimes good foods are just too rich. There are lots of good foods out there these days, but not all of them work for all dogs.

All that said, I would always recommend raw as being the best thign you can feed.

Glad you contacted your local weim club, they should be able to give you a good vet reference.

It sounds to me that your dogs need digestive enzymes and a probiotic. Another problem could be that your dogs are "wolfing" their food, and their not digesting the food.
