|
|
Hello!
So I'm curious how many whistle train?
The reason I ask is because I'm going to start with Danni and I'm looking for advise. (We had her out this weekend and it would've been nice... ) For-instance, I've heard that a recall is long and drawn out and a short pip means sit. So my question is what is the general rule for whistle commands? I've been told Roy Gonias are the best... http://shop.dogsunlimited.com/item.asp?n=gw&d=35&b=1
There is only a handful in our NAVHDA chapter who use whistles and they are rarely at training days.
Also...visibility and bells!
I have a bright collar for Danni and a fluorescent yellow Velcro collar. (The velcro collar has an interchangeable yellow or orange sleeve that is about 4" tall x 6" wide) I know some use vests but I'm thinking they're going to get tangled in the brush. Opinions?
And one more thing...bells. I have seen both bells and beepers and I'm looking for opinions which is better.
Thanks everybody! |

Candra,
Mine are limited on whistle training but I do use one in the field. It doesn't matter what commands other people use as long as you use consistent commands.
I use a bright orange or yellow collar, no vest. I will say that those dogs that have a little more hair on the belly are WAY more protected from brush scratches.
I don't use bells or beepers, but I'd choose a beeper over a bell. |

Thanks.
If you don't mind me asking, what commands do you use in the field?
I'll be working with a recall, but any other suggestions on the commands she should be taught?
Jeff uses a bell on Greta (I thought that was neat...) but I can get a beeper on an e-collar...hmmm...decisions, decisions.
(I will hold off on the e-collar though, I don't want to introduce it too early)
Gotta get going now, hopefully it's a repeat of Sunday.
Appreciate your advice!

| 2 toots for getting them going or to turn, 1 long toot plus a bunch of short ones for recall. That's about it. |

Re: Vests for visibility - a neoprene vest provides warmth and belly protection, and also helps them float when swimming. We have blaze (hunter) orange, but camo is also available. Got mine for less than $30 Cdn at S.I.R. Hunting supply (Canada).
(We don't hunt, but people we know who hunt with GSP's put us on to these.) |
