Please pass along to other dog/pet owners, lack of information leads to numerous health problems and shortened lifespan, very good, clear video.

Thanks Idaviruma for the link! That is pretty scary! I really began research on pet foods like most people because of the recalls. I had always just trusted the vet and fed Science Diet. I even went so far as to consult with a lady who specializes in dog nutrition. Now I feed Solid Gold Wolf King because it has ingredients like Bison, Salmon, Blueberries etc. Ingredients that need no interpretation. And it is high in Omega-3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. No by-products, no allergens! In addition no products from China!
In the process I learned that Scout was allergic to corn, the vet had decided her hot spots were separation anxiety and had even wanted to put her on Prozac and Cyclosporines! Both are expensive and can have bad side effects. Now with just the change in diet her coat is great and no more hot spots! Solid Gold was the most accessible to me but I think there are getting to be a lot of high quality foods out there. It is really worth it to do the research!

Here is another site you can check, it is pretty informative My last dog had lupus and died of cancer, so I have been researching foods for several years now, scary what is out there in the food. At least with this last pet food scare I didn't have to worry.

I feed my boy Timberwolf organics Ocean Blue. He loves it and appears to do wonderfully. It is insanely expensive, but previously fed Wellness Whitefish and Sweet potato, but he had very large stools.......now much smaller and firmer. Searching for a similar good quality cheaper alternative.
He is a little guy (~65#), but eats absolutely everything...a walking garbage disposal, so he gets LOTS of fresh fruits and veggies as his "cookies".
I am a veg, but realize my dog is not. Philosophically I have come to terms with feeding the fish, so I guess for now I pay a high price for my "ideals" .

| I don't know about into their 20's..but with high quality food or raw fresh feeding they can absolutely enjoy better health thoughout their life. The oldest dog I am truly aware of is 17 and she was a golden lab. I met her at my vet's office. |

A lot of things contribute to longevity, not just diet alone. |

Wow!!! Much like WeiMe, I've always just trusted my Vet and fed by their recommendation!! Its bothersome to think that I'm to blame for liver failure and a host of other health related issues that my pup could suffer from!!
What do you guys feed?? Any recommendations from the "true professionals" ... nothing thing to consider is having a kibble shipped overseas as Sicily isn't the dog lovers paradise that most countries are!! |

I feed a partial fresh raw diet. I supplement with a good quality food; mostly Solid Gold varieties.
They get kibble in the morning and fresh raw at night.
There are two reasons I don't do all raw. One is cost. With four dogs it costs me about $70 a week not including kibble and goodies. The second is morning convenience. We both work full time and it is just easier in the morning to give them some kibble.
I look forward to when I will be able to do all raw. It is so good for them. |

Okay sooo i've been doing some reading... now, how do i make Raw feeding affordable?? is there a selection of meats that you use vice others? why is rice okay but wheat and other glutens arent? My pups get left over steak when we grill and invetitably end up with the "runs" how can i introduce all these new foods without making a monster mess?
A few of the websites i read touched on a few of these questions but danced around the answers.. from those who have made the switch, what should i know and be prepared for? |

I have my own doubts about raw especially with it being difficient in certain nutrients or filled with hormones, so I feed mine a varied diet of raw and cooked meat, kibble ( orijen), canned- innova evo and merrick and healthy human foods like yogurt and cottage cheese, apples, etc.
Occasional healthy treat, he luvs his honey doggy biscuits. |
