Seriously. I was just a little more than cheesed off yesterday.
Yesterday morning - my Dad pops in for a quick visit. He's always been very friendly with Django and thinks he is pretty cool. Django was pretty excited, and Dad was giving him the usual "oogy boogy" type baby-talk that inevitibley happens all the time and as Dad slips his shoes off, Django gives him a little nip on the toe. My Dad reaches down and HITS Django. He must have done it hard, because I heard it in the kitchen.
Needless to say, I was pretty upset and angrily told my Dad never to hit him again. I explained the whole hitting=fear=aggression speech. Dad apologized, but man...
Yesterday afternoon - me, my wife and Django are walking around our local Canada Day car show and a stranger asks to pet the dog. No problem - at least he asked. Django had been getting the love from just about everyone that day. This dude was asking all kinds of questions while he was petting him and was getting kind of rough with Django (keep in mind, Django is just 13 weeks old...still a baby in my books) Django was getting bitey due to the rough play (as per normal), and this dude grabs my dog by his bottom jaw and holds him there. Django was freaking out trying to get away and this dude just held on. Before I could register what this clown was doing, my wife said "Ok, Django time to go" and we left. She did this to get away from this guy. I was flabbergasted and intent on separating this man from his teeth, but thought better of it.
What the heck is wrong with people? Why do they think it's ok to hit/molest your dog?? I certainly wouldn't do that to someone else's dog.
I'll be a little more wary of strangers and my dog from now on. Anyone else have something like this happen to them? How did you deal with it? |

What I REALLY wanted to do was to stick my thumbs in his eye sockets but figured that might just exasperate the situation.
Seriously. If his CHILD bit me (and let's face it, toddlers DO bite so this is a fair comparison) would he like it if I grabbed the kid's lower jaw and started yanking on it? It's the same thing isn't it? Just like I would have no right to put my hands on his child, he has no right doing that to my dog especially since he instigated it. Am I wrong?

| I would have told that guy to get his hands off my dog! My Mom is of the old school of thought that you smack a dog if they do something wrong. I've asked her not to hit my dogs and she abides. I've had the absolute hardest time trying to teach visitors how to handle my dogs....say when they jump and such. I swear it's easier to teach the dogs than the people!!! |

Some people!
I hope none of these people have their own pets!!
I think kids can be pretty cruel. I know puppy socialization is going to be important for my pup but I'm already dreading it. When Timbit was a young dog, we took him everywhere. I remember when a parent got mad at me after Timbit growled at their child; but what do you expect when your child is standing there pulling on the dog's tail and wont let go. Ugh kids can be so mean and rough. I guess some just don't even grow out of it! |

It's so true. Some don't grow out of it.
We've learned first hand how mean kids can be. Both of our kids were victims of bullying at school and when I see people like THAT man, I can't help but wonder if he was a bully when he was a kid. |

That brings up a sore point for me....the neighbors behind me have two small children. Keep in mind that my property is completely fenced and we already lived in our house when their house was built and their children were born in that house.
Well, these kids are brats..they are a little older now, maybe 4-5 & 6-7. They tease my dogs. I've seen the boy poking a stick through the fence at my Gunnar, have found numerous toys in my yard that were obviously thrown at the dogs. A couple weeks ago, my husband found a dog treat box that was full of ROCKS in our yard. He was so pissed off he was flipping out in the yard. He thinks they heard him because they haven't said much to us. And the kid had the nerve to ask me if I found any of his toys in my yard. The reason I have not spoken to the parents is because I have seen them standing there when these kids are teasing the dogs.
SO, if I see them messing with the dogs, I tell them to get away from the fence. Let Mom or Dad come on out. I told the girl to leave the dogs alone the other day. These kids are the reason my dogs bark so much now when they are back there. I'm waiting for them to say something about that.
Obviously, these kids are taught they can do know wrong as the boy will torment my dogs while I am standing there. He gets VERY close to the fence and hisses at them.
John knows we will eventually have to spend the money to put up a high privacy fence. |

Good fences make good neighbours. (or however that saying goes)
That makes me SO crazy. We just recently built a new house that we really weren't ready for but the reason we did it was because our old neighbourhood was FILLED with absentee parents. The kids ran wild and did whatever they wanted and the parents didn't care. We had been told by one of our neighbours (and family, if you can believe it) that we are "too strict" with our children. Well, our kids are certainly not perfect but we often receive compliments on how well behaved they are and more importantly, they recognize bad behaviour in other children and comment on it. At the very least, our kids didn't bust branches off trees, throw balls at people's houses, hit other kids with hockey sticks, or rip the screens off the windows while we sat and drank our faces off on the front lawn. Yep...that's what it was turning into before we left. Our kids are so happy to be out of that neighbourhood...and so are we!
It makes me crazy that those kids are tormenting your dogs. Build a fence as soon as you can...build it high, and build it strong. |

If the kids that gutsy I'd probably go with a High Privacy fence so they don't have the opportunity to throw something in that might poison the dogs.
I'm lucky. With the way the roads(I live on a corner) go and over an acre of land the only neighbor that is close enough for me to hear or have to deal with is a very old, nice man who thinks we are spectacular! When I still lived at home I had a %$#*%* of a neighbor so I feel your pain |

My father-in-law does the same thing with our oldest Weim Zane...the wapping of the dog, when dog comes over and is too hyper, or to in his face. My solution....he is not aloud around our dogs anymore. He comes to our house, the dogs are baby gated...away from father-in-law. I have the you can talk to them but don't touch rule.
With others, out in public...I like my dogs to beable to interact with humans, but if I see them to be unfit, or even a bit werid...stay the hell away from me and my dogs. Still have the look but don't touch rule...
Big giant weirdo that I am. These dogs are my life....

WE have a weird kind of fence... stockade on once side and chain link a;l around. We had bushes on the other side and took them out... not really a problem as all our neighbors LOVE B n J however......
the one neighbor allows all the kids in his yard to pet his goldens. Some moms dont like that and neither does his gf, but soemtimes the dogs are out and I dont hink the guy even knows the kids are there...
When they are there, they feel it's ok to reach over to pet B n J. While I doubt they'd get nipped at, I really dont feel comfortable. I think it's inappropriate in the first place that they are there.
Since I can't really afford another stockade fence and I'm not planting any more bushes there yet, I was going to put a sign up that says:
PLEASE DO NOT PET BLUE AND JUNE OVER THE FENCE. YES< THAT MEANS YOU>
Is that rude?
Also, there are other kids from around the corner that definately provoke B n J when i have the front door open... they stop and stare in or make faces til they are barking their heads off. That's when I usually slam the door. What I'd really like to do is let them loose ! I have on occasion told the kids NOT TO tease the dogs as I'm shutting the door. You should see the looks I get.... |
