Weim with neck problems

Postby taylorcraft » Tue Jul 20, 2010 5:36 pm

My Indy is a rescue weim, I'm not sure how old he is. Maybe 6-8 years. He has extreme pain in his neck area that has been going on for 3 weeks. He can barely hold his head up and if you place your hand under his chin he will rest the full weight of his head in your hand. When he does walk he acts like he is walking on egg shells and kind of crosses his paws in front of each other. I took him to the vet when it first started, he gave him a pain shot and prescription for rimadyl and sent him home. The rimadyl worked for about a week then he got worse. Back to the vet, they then gave him a steroid shot started him on prednisone and he was great for about 2 days and he got worse still. He has been at the vets for 2 days now, x-rays look good, blood work looks good, they are waiting for test results for tick born diseases. When I talked to the vet earlier she said he walked outside but then laid down to urinate. Depending on the tick born disease test results they are thinking arthritis or encephalitis.
I am at a loss of what to do. Anyone heard of anything like this? My heart is breaking, I just lost a weim to kidney disease a year and half ago. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a holistic vet near you? They might not be able to help with the diagnosis, but they might be able to help with the pain, by doing acupuncture or something similar.

He needs to see an orthopedic vet. Weims can be prone to Wobbler's syndrome.

I would also suggest holistic treatment for the problem. Holistic simply means that you have a treatment plan that encompasses all veterinary practices whether they be western or eastern. And anytime I hear of pain like you're talking about, and nothing is obvious to the average vet, then you need to explore further into some chiropractic and accupuncture care. Is there a University near you with a veterinary hospital? They can be excellent at figuring out little mysteries plus they should have the full range of services available. When I had to take Milo to Texas A&M, he saw veterinary students, a regular vet, a neurologist, a physical therapist and an accupuncturist all in the same day in the same place. Having all those minds and skill sets in one place is great for solving healthy problems.

Best of luck and I do hope you're able to find out what's wrong. The poor guy is obviously in a lot of pain. You might also try some gentle massage of the neck and shoulders at home to alleviate some of the pain until you can find the source of the problem.

I did find a Holistic Vet here and will look into the chiropractic. Our vet did mention maybe taking him to Auburn University. Thank you for your suggestions. I just want him to be helped and out of pain.

If you have the opportunity to go to auburn where you could consult multiple specialists, I would do it. I went through a similar situation and we went to Texas A&M. They were able to conduct lots of tests and isolate the issue....

If you have a chance to go to Auburn jump on it! I have several friends who have had dogs treated there with great success.

We are headed to Auburn in the morning. The vet's here are at a loss. Indy is actually worse even with the steroids and pain medication. He can't even use his front legs now. Hopefully Auburn will help. Keep us in your prayers.
