Was it a seizure? Sleeping sitting up? or something else?

Postby AmazingGrayce » Fri Apr 30, 2010 4:49 pm

I'm a bit nervous to share this because Im frightened of the responses I may get.

Monday night I had to rush Grayce to the emergency vet. I was sitting on the couch and she had of course squeezed herself up next to me in a tiny spot between myself and the end of the couch. She was not lying down next to me but sitting up. I was on my lapop tying away and working on something. With my peripheral vision I saw Grayce doing something funny so I turned to look at her. She was sitting up, nose pointed at the ceiling, with her eyes completely rolled back in her head, 3rd eyelids completely covering her eyes (the weird pink eyelid thing), with her head slowly rocking back and forth like she was dazed and confused. I grabbed her with both hands shook her and yelled her name. She kept doing it. I did it again...no real response. I screamed for my boyfriend who was upstairs and he came running. He saw her doing it too..I yelled her name..still 3rd eyelids covering her eyes and head all wobbly. At this point he says "lets go now". I jump up from the couch..and than she actually got up and jumped off the couch. I looked at her and her eyes were still all funny and she was standing there confused..basically like she was blind. I again shook her and yelled her name...this time her eyes went back to normal. I cant really say how long this went on for..bc as you can imagine it truly felt like it was forever..but if I was to guess maybe 1 minute..but who knows how long she was doing it before I noticed. I Started putting shoes on and grabbed her leash..by the time I grabbed her leash she was basically her normal happy self. Jumping excited that we were taking her somewhere. Took her to the ER and she was fine the entire time. Vitals everything came back good.

Told the vet a description of what happened ..they asked a few questions (like was she twitching or spasming at all or did her eyes twitch..answers to both are no). The vet said while it def sounded odd it did not sound like a seizure. She said sometimes when dogs feel sick the 3rd eyelids come out...so maybe they covered her eyes and she couldnt see and was confused?? Sounds like a far reach..but I dont know..it was so weird.

I of course the entire ride to the vet was thinking a neurological problem or brain cancer or something along those horrible lines. The vet did not seem concerned and basically told me chances are I may never know what it was. Im trying my best to believe her that is the case but there is still that awful nagging in the back of my head that what if it really was something neurological...and something that if I ignore it could progress because I wait on it.

Im hoping by posting it on here that maybe..just maybe the description above will jump out at someone as something they have experienced..or heard about and if there is someone who has dealt with it before..that they tell me it is in fact no big deal and nothing to worry.

Im not ready to be told that my not even 5 year old baby has something serious wrong with her. Im hopeful it will never ever happen again. Ive been scared everyday that I come home from work that something will have happened whle no one was home.

not to add to your panic, but can you get a second opinion? Did they do bloodwork or even suggest some sort of brain scan?

I actually have an appointment on Tuesday at NGAP for Danger and Grayce. He needs thyroid re-testing and she was due for her distemper. I plan on speaking with the vet there about and seeing what he thinks.

Yes they did offer bloodwork. She told us that our options were to do bloodwork or observe her and bring her back if anything else seemed funny and that either option she would support.

The vet said she thought she just must have felt funny/woozy and thats why the eyelids came out like that...and was disoriented bc she couldnt see and wasnt sure what was going on. She said if she felt it was a seizure or there were any signs of an issue still with her eyes or vitals she would have suggested further testing/scans...but she felt that there wasnt an issue at this point in her opinion that would require jumping into have extensive testing done yet.

Due to the fact that she was acting 100% fine and that my boyfriend had the next 2 days off from work and promised ot stay home with her we chose to hold off on the bloodwork. I will see about getting some done if the vet suggests it at NGAP since danger is getting his bloodwork done that day too.

ITs strange..but Im also not 100% sure the dopey dog wasnt just falling asleep sitting up (shes done it before!!) and I panicked. I will find the money to do whatever testing is necessary but something like a brain scan I cant even begin to imagine how much it costs and I really cant afford to have tests like that done unless they are really felt necessary.

I will get my second opinion Tuesday.

Any other thoughts are appreciated.

I hope she was just really tired and falling asleep sitting up. Glad to see that the vet didnt jump right to expensive testing without seeing if it repeated... She was ok the next few days?

I'm sorry, I wish I had something to offer but I've never experienced anything like what you described. I'm glad to hear it hasn't happened again and hopefully it will stay that way.

It is scary. When they do something odd and out of the ordinary and for the first time.
The cause could be as simple as nibbling or inhaling some fresh bloom in the yard. They could just get a bit
stoned like when i have that second glass of red wine on an empty stomach.

I've only raised three weims from puppy. They have all had their quirks. I think thousands of time i've said,
"sweetie! come here. what's he doing? why is she jerking like that?"
Bob has that crazy reverse sneeze. Much more as a puppy but i freaked the first time.
Connie has always had very violent dreams, eyes rolling, jerking like madd. (my little niece started crying it scared
her so much)
She is having a doozie right now and her eyes are open. Then she goes dead quiet for about three minutes, not even breathing.
Sounds kinda mean but sometimes i'll toss a toy to see if she is alive. Otherwise i'd be up and checking every ten minutes.

Lewie had seizures. Often, i think, a catch-all for unexplained twitching. This was pre internet but i now know that it was bloat.
Two vets said seizures. I don't recall the medications but i would have done things so much differently had i known more about the signs
of bloat.

I would keep a calendar journal of sorts. Just so if it happens again you can see if a pattern exists. We have had an extreme weather change.
More time outside. Hot sun. Mine are sleeping odd after a weekend in the country running. And it is the first of the month so the heartworm med
was given...
Just last night before sunset we were doing a bit of yard work and Bob spread out on the slate pathway. Never has he done that. He would not even
respond to my call. His eyes open, i sat with him for 5 minutes. Left him alone for 10. I finally forced him up and he staggered a bit. I ran and got
some sweet potato treats from the freezer. He was fine immediately  . And i was about to panic...

So i hope you are experiencing a one time thing. Fingers crossed. The bounce back was so quick i think all is fine and no serious seizure.

How scary for you and Grayce! I do not have much to offer but, I hope it is nothing serious for the both of you. I do hope you get some answers tomorrow as well. Hopefully it is nothing and just some fluke/weird thing she did and it will never happen again. Thinking of you. :flower:

I tried to reply the other day while at work but somehow i erased what I wrote. I am praying its not a seizure, if it is you will know then fur sure. Once they have a seizure they always have more following, it could be days, weeks, or months. Try and see if you can get a baby camera in the room so you can always record her. You need to know if it ever happens again. Praying it never does!!!

Hey guys! Sorry for the delayed response. So went for the vet visit on Tuesday...I explained in detail to the vet exactly what happened..she asked me a lot of the same questions that the emergency vet had asked. Her response was pretty much exactly what the other vet told me. She said it could be nothing or it could be something but it does not sound like enough to start running any major tests yet. She said to just keep an eye on her and bring her in if it happens again and keep a log of details.

So I should be cautious but not panic just yet. I feel better having had 2 different vets tell me the same thing.
