| We've been putting off building a training table... a couple days ago we got an e-mail from a very nice member of our NAVHDA chapter who was contacted by a former member who wanted to sell his awesome hand built with love training table for $20! I'm so excited, and even better it was SO nice of her to think of us and give us a heads up before she put it in the newsletter! |

That's exactly the one my husband built.
They are good for any training that requires you to lean over and position a dog as they save your back. Also, some feel that they help a dog focus on training as they are in an elevated position. You can do the same training on the ground it's just another tool.
We used it while teaching Marvin to whoa (sort of a stay) but now we have moved on to the ground and going from him moving to a whoa to help steady him on point. |

I'm not so into the training table in general but we have used it before when suddenly one day Indy decided that she was not so into picking up pigeons anymore (damn rats with wings). Uh, I don't think so. So up on the table she went. You can see how displeased she is with her roaching her back badly like that, but that took care of that!

Me neither. I will FF ( very rare occasion) on a table, but thats about it. I whoa train on the ground. I just don't like to have too much stuff. They are useful tools that have their place, just not in my program. |

Congrats on the table Mindy! That was so nice of her to think of you, free or almost free training gear is the best!
I'm sure you'll put it to great use!
Thanks to Anne and H20...I won't use a table anymore but it could be useful at certain times. (Anne...the body language of Indy is hilarious! LMAO...she DOES NOT want to do that! ) I thought FF was necessary but Danni already loves to fetch so I'm not going to force her.
Like H20, I'm teaching the "whoa" concept on the ground and I like to keep things simple. |

We have whoa on the ground down pat... just need to keep up the practice. For winter I think having the table to use in the house will be helpful for that. I'm not quite sure at this point what I'll use it for or how... but for $20 it's a REALLY nice table... we couldn't even buy the materials to build one for that much!
How do you get a dog to reliably retrieve on command without FF? Luna does love to retrieve already... I do not wish to ruin that for her!
She's an incredible dog... her tracking, swimming, nose and cooperation are awesome... just the search and pointing we're lacking on. Her bird excitement is getting in the 'way up there' range Last night at training she was actually being vocal about not going out after the birds! |

Hell yeah it is! I'd take it too!

The fetch command also means "hold it" and I used a CC. Right now I'm working on her circling around behind me, coming into a heel position and sit at my side while holding the object. It sounds much more complicated than it is...LOL!

That's awesome! The pointing will come...I have no doubts!

LOL! Danni has been known to howl...not proud of that but it was hilarious! I'd rather hear a dog being vocal and all hyped up about birds than a dog who just sits there (with no interest in birds) like a stick in the mud. But now if that dog was trained (just calm) then that's awesome too! |

Winter is when we used it. I think it helped focus our sessions rather just working around the furniture in the basement.

We're working on retrieves as well. I hope we can stay away from FF since I'm not sure I'd be up to it. Right now I am keeping it short, fun with some multiple retrieves and hold it.

Sounds like you are making great progress. Marvin is also vocal when he's left behind It's funny since he doesn't do it at any other time but I'm glad he wants to be out there. |

The short answer is repetition and consistency. When she understands what is expected, you will get reliable retrieves 99% of the time. (It's the 1% that most people FF for.) FF is also faster to achieve the same results. FF however has some major side effects that pop up in some dogs. Soft natured dogs are more prone to the problems than dogs like retrievers and EP's.
To give an idea of what I'm trying to say, my Zeus will put ducks under the seat of my blind after a retrieve, because that's where I want them. All other birds, he retrieves to hand because he KNOWS that is what I EXPECT. It was made clear to him thru repetition and consistency. There was no doubt/confusion of what I wanted. The same holds true for all training. Once someone learns to keep things simple and consistent then follows up thru repetition, it makes things clear to the dog and training is quicker and much easier.

I agree, you got a great deal. A training table has many uses and will come in handy. A few ideas off the top of my head are FF,whoa training, grooming and bike ramp .

Don't worry about the pointing and searching right now. Build on her excitement. You get her desire out the roof and she WILL search. The pointing will come later. |

My view on FF....
If you don't have the constitution to do it all the way thru, don't do it. Or hire someone else to do it.
Also think about how important that 100% is to you. It's OK for me if it's 99%, my 2 older dogs are great natural retrievers. Now I do co-own a pup now that will have to be FF, I know that already. So, it really does depend on the dog as well. |

I am soooo jealous! On account of my extreme fear of chainsaws and hammers, I've been trying to get my husband to build a training table forEVER now. Still no table.
I think FF is a great thing, but not for the weak-hearted. Your dog will tell you to shove it and go on about his/her business at some point in training. I'm okay with the 99% retrieve, but the 70-85% retriever gives me trouble. You only have to blow a 3-pt major once by having a dog that decapitates the bird then rolls on the remains to become a proponent of FF.
I have a terrible hard-mouthed beast (see above!) and one with sloppy retrieves and a too-soft mouth. (Not to mention a dislike of wet feathers and pigeons). Even a watered down FF does wonders for sloppy mouths. We just started with the hard mouthed dog, and she (unlike the other dog who fought me every step of the way) has yet to pitch a fit.
