so i guess what it comes down to is that using his crate is not going to damage his crate training...?...but that having kids will lower my i.q., even if i am not a blonde... Razz

No it shouldn't if he's already crate trained. If he's having issues with is crate, then that is different.

He is a cryer. Lucky for me he hasn't figured out how to bark yet so its not that loud but the crying can last hours. Thats another reason I am hesitant to use his crate for time out. Time out is only supposed to be a couple minutes. If I use his crate, it could be anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 hours. I don't think thats fair.

OK now that I have a fuller picture, I would not use the crate for a time out in your situation....

Tonight seemed to work well for the time out. I am knocking on wood right now but I do think that he is starting to understand that the only way out of timeout is to sit and be quiet. At one point he jumped up on the counter-top (SOOOO NOT OK IN MY HOUSE) and when I yelled "NO" from across the room he ran to the "timeout" door and waited. I had to force myself not to laugh and tell him what a good boy he was....

He is my baby goof ball. Sometimes when I should be mad I can't help but laugh at him.

But I did want to let everyone know that time out is getting much easier. We started taking him to his crate (no bed no toys nothing) for 5 minutes if he jumps or chews the time out leash and that seems to be working. We have started to "untrain" him to be on the couch (figure 8s are starting to rip it up) and it seems to be working as well.
