I am so heartbroken over this. On Sunday, I'll be helping in a transport through OH to MWR. Honestly, I don't know who I feel worse for, this boy, or his family. We all have our ideals and thoughts on "How could they" or "If it were me", but for me, I feel deeply for this family. When I got off the phone with the man tonight, I burst into tears.
They are an older couple, the wife is sick. After her first stroke, bills piled up and they foreclosed on their home. Since their first contact with MWR, the matter has become urgent - the wife suffered yet another stroke. As I spoke with this man tonight, he was in the process of clearing out his basement to have an "everything must go"-type garage sale.
It's always so easy to pass judgement when we don't know the actual circumstances surrounding these relinquishments. And yes, there are PLENTY of a-wipes out there who are total pigs that never should've owned a dog in the first place. But that's not the case for everyone.
With everything going on here lately, the sicknesses, the bad-mouthing other forum members, etc, we need to stop - take a look at our own lives and what we have and be THANKFUL that we are able to do the things we do and love the people and dogs (and cats) in our lives and try not to worry so much about everyone else's business.
Sometimes, and I know I am extremely guilty of this, we think we have it so bad and times are tough, blah blah blah - but it takes the unfortunate events of someone else to realize how truly lucky and blessed we are. So take a few minutes, love your kids, your furkidz, your husband/wife/significant other and thank God for all the blessings in life.

Thank you, Amy. What you have said is so true. We can't totally know another persons situation or what is really in their heart.
I imagine this man would give a world if he could keep the dog. What comfort they could be to each other. But the situation makes that not possible.
Thank you... |

Amy, thank you for saying that. I wholeheartedly agree.
I hope this man's wife gets better. A stoke is something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. I've been witnessing firsthand for over 10 years now how it takes a persons life away. |

So, I did it. But it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I expected this man to be really upset, but I think with all he has going on right now, he was somewhat relieved knowing that "Duke" will be well cared for now. Not only was this man's wife ill, but the strokes had affected her mind....he really has his hands full with her (turning off the gas to the stove so she doesn't blow the place up, gating stairs, hiding keys...) it was sad to see. But at least now he'll be able to devote all his time and energy to his wife without feeling like he's neglecting Duke.
Duke's a BIG boy ! Not quite sure I've seen such a large weim (um, more width than actual size)! But he was very well behaved in the car (I had my 3 kids with me) and super friendly and seemed to listen well. I will be very anxious to see him when he loses some weight.
All in all, it went well and it was VERY apparent that his owners loved him and treated him as a family member. I wish Duke all the best for his new future !
I'll post his link when it's up |
