I have an 85-pound, 7-year-old male Weimaraner (another "Jaeger"). As a result of an apparent sprain retrieving three weeks ago, Jaeger has swelling (of a tendon?) above the carpus / dew pad on one of his front legs. A vet splinted the leg with the intention to keep the joint immobile for 2-6 weeks. Unfortunately, the splint only lasted several hours. Jaeger walked on his pads and tore a nail, bypassing the splint. I have an appointment with an orthopaedist next week (Veterinary Specialty Center, Buffalo Grove, IL).
In the meantime, I am trying to keep Jaeger as inactive as possible, including through the use of the tranquilizer acepromazine. But he really, really wants to run.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of injury?

| My 10 year old female has the same thing. Last summer I noticed it when we were swimming. She had been standing on steep rocks near water, and I think it strained it. The vet xrayed and it looked ok. I started measuing it to see if it went down and it eventually did, but it is still noticable and this happened last august. It never seemed to bother her. |

How did you make out with the specialist?? I am curious. My male, Chevy, 5, now has swelling on each front leg above the dew pad. The first leg was treated as an injury, without a splint, holistically. The second swelled up bigger than the first about 4 weeks later, possibly as the result of Lyme.
About 4 weeks later (now) the swelling is small walnut sized, hard as a rock, above each dew pad.
I want the swelling GONE. |
