Hey all,

I kenneled my pup (Enzo, 1y 3m, MN) for three nights last week as I was called out of town on short notice. I decided to spoil him since I was going to be out of town for several days and took him to the local "pet resort". My impression of this establishment was top notch. It was clean, the staff was friendly, and the dogs were being handled well. I might add that I signed him up for an optional play time and an extra potty break during the day so he would get outside more and be able to be a little more active. He also stayed in a 4x14 foot kennel 24x7, so he had plenty of room to stretch his legs a bit. Yes, I spent almost as much putting him up as I did on the hotel for my trip... and it was also just about as nice!

Anywho, I picked him up yesterday. He was happy to see me and energetic. We stopped by a friend's house, went home, he ate a little extra food (he already had dinner when I picked him up), and at about 7:00pm he completely crashed out on the couch. He couldn't hold his eyes open. He slept a full 14 hours and has been sleeping on and off all day and into the evening today. He's still incredibly tired... as in can't hold his eyes open kind of tired. I've never seen him this worn out, and we are incredibly active in terms of physical activity and normal daily travel (expect to this one location because the hotels in the area don't accept pets Mad).

I've taken his temperature and it's normal. He's eating. No runny poop beyond what's normal for this make and model. No cough. He seems to be somewhat healthy beyond just being incredibly tired. Could it be that my pup just didn't sleep well (or at all) while he was at the kennel? I've kennel him in the past and he's never come home like this before. I need to kennel him this Sunday and Monday night (unfortunately going back to the same location) and I want him to be as comfortable as possible.I have reservations at the same location. Should I take him back? Anyone experienced the same thing?

Just a worried weim daddy.

Thanks for any input.

Do you have any other dogs at home? Derek is an only child (hehe) and he always comes back from the kennel exhausted. We walk between 5-7 miles every day but he gets much more stimulation at the kennel.

I'd take him back to the same place. I tired weim is a happy weim.

Yeah, Enzo is an "only child" as well. He runs almost every day with the neighbor's dogs and we go to the dog park about once or twice a week, so he is used to a high level of activity with other dogs as well as his people. I guess this was just too much for the little guy. He's perked up a tad, though zonked out on the couch as I type this. I'll take him back and see how it turns out this week. I don't mind him being so worn out at all, i just want to ensure that nothing is wrong with my buddy.

Rosie comes home tired after a night or two away from home also. I think it's the different environment, the new sights, playing with other dogs, and just the overall stress that contributes to their exhaustion. She also gets super bloodshot eyes when she's had enough and needs sleep.

Wilson does the same thing when we board him. The first time we got him back he was so tired or laid back that we called the lady that owns the place and she said he did nothing but run and play the whole time he was there. But after about a day or two he came back around to being a normal Wils again.

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback - he seems to be doing better this morning after another long night's sleep. Just in time to drop him back off for another couple of days. Very Happy

Once a week I take Zane to doggy day care for 10-12 hours and he is knocked out on the way home, walks up the stairs and gets right in his crate, and sleeps most of the next day. I too think it's the different environment and mental stimulation that wears them out. I say it's a good thing and you should take him back when you're away!
