Hi! My husband and I are getting a weimaraner soon. We are so excited! We have been wanting a Weim for the last 16 months and can't wait to pick her out.
We haven't picked a breeder yet and I was wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions on questions to ask or advice on what to look for in a Weim puppy.
If anyone has any advice I can't wait to hear it!
Thanks! |

Hi, I see you are in Woodland Hills. I'm not sure I"ve received an email from you, but I am breeder referral for the Orange Coast Weim Club. The Southland Weim Club is also a So Cal club, and you should email Joan Valdez. See www.weimclubamerica.org.
Please write us and let us know what you are looking for.
One thing... don't expect a good breeder to let you choose your own puppy. Good breeders spend lots of time observing the puppies, seeing what their personalities are like, and then temperament testing the puppies. Obviously the high energy puppy shoudlnt' go to an elderly owner for example, or a mellow pup shouldn't go to the family that wants an active dog to take everywhere.
As to what to look for and what to ask, please see http://www.wonderpuppy.net/breeding.htm
And kudos to you for asking before you leap!! |

Thank you so much for the information! It was really helpful. It's good to know that a good breeder will help pick a dog that suits us. I've been researching the breed for months and I can't wait to get one! I've never purchased a dog from a breeder before and I've always had pound puppies or rescues so I'm a little lost.
Do a lot of breeders frown on people owning weims who aren't hunters? Are there any books out that might be helpful on raising Weims? |

I had the same worries. Scout is from a very strong hunting line and her breeder was a hunter. However I told him my interests were in agility and tracking and that I just wanted a companion dog. He was fine with this and picked Scout out for me because she was really "tenderhearted" and pretty shy. He felt that she would do best as a pet and I got her with a limited registration since I had no plans to breed her.
I think it was a great match! I did end up hunting with her because she loves it sooo much and is really pretty good at it! |
