Zehen's bumps come and go, and they are spreading over his neck and shoulders onto his back. I'm wondering if maybe he has a food allergy?

Could be almost anything. My dog had bumps, beginning on his back, then sides and progressed to haunches. One vet said allergies, took him to my other vet, he didn't rule out allergies, but said that it was a raging infection that was not controlled, he put him on Cephlexin, 3 week later he is fine, all cleared up, and hasn't returned
It is a process of elimination. Such as have you changed food in the last two weeks, have you changed flea medication? Has he been rolling in the grass?
What kind of bumps are they? Do they get a head/scab on them? Do they bleed when irritated, like brushing his coat? Where did they start? Neck, shoulders, back? Have they begun a pattern of progression? i.e. started on neck, then moved down on back/shoulders?.
Keep me posted

The bumps started when he was a puppy- he had them on his nose. These were just raised bumps. My old vet told me cortisone cream- I did that they eventually cleared up. Then came the ear infections. He had an on going yeast infection in his ear. Finally my new vet found a medication to clear it up. Then came the scary tumor like lump in his groin. That turned out to just be an allergic reaction to something. He also got the bumps again on his nose at this time. The new vet put him on simplicef for 2 weeks and that seemed to clear everything up. She suggested that he was allergic to plastic (we had a plastic water bowl) and that's why he was getting the bumps on his nose. We changed water bowls and nothing came back for a while. Then he started breaking out under his chin, over his nose and on his neck. Bumps that broke out into pustules after a few days. He itches and is uncomfortable. My vet put him on cephalexin. He did a week of cephalexin and then got diarrhea one night, so I stopped it for a while. His skin looked OK, but not great. I started it back up after his diarrhea cleared up. Finished up the medication and his skin looked good again. Now 4 days without antibiotics he looks horrible again. Bumps all over his neck, on his shoulders and on his flanks. He had an allergic reaction to the flea and tick stuff I put on him a week ago. He broke out in hives. I gave him a good bath and some benadryl and he seemed better after that. He is still tender if you run your hand down his back, especially between his shoulder blades- where I put the flea stuff. He has a little hair loss in that area too.

He only wears a collar when he's going outside. He eats Taste of the Wild-the pacific forumla mixed with the high prairie formula (Salmon, Venison, Bison).

Can you try feeding him just one or the other for awhile and see if this makes any difference? If no change right away, you may have to wait 4-6 weeks to see if it helps. If no change then with the first food, try the other food only.

Do the symptoms come and go all year? If so, it could be a seasonal allergy.

When his ears get bad -- are they OK one day and then seem to get itchy and red suddenly? Do they smell (maybe 'fishy')? If they seem OK and then get bad quickly, you might ask your vet about the possibility of allergy to yeast. That's what Jazz has. It sort of doubles the "fun" of it, since she is allergic to the yeast infection.

Sometimes antibiotics will cause side effects such as diarrhea. The vet gave me 120 caplets. The Cephexlin was to be given 2 cap, 2x daily. This was to be given for a period of 10 days., and then use as needed. Well it took a full 9 days for the bumps to go away, and then he still had some flaky skin, cause by the dried up bumps. So I called the vet and continued with the medication for another 2 full weeks. As I remember Owen threw up ( and had very loose stools several times too) one day about 20 minutes after I medicated him and then fed him. And then 2 days later he did it again after his night feeding I wasn't too concern because he had it in his system, because it had stayed down 20 minutes, so no need to dose again.
I have plenty of antibiotics left, so if it reoccurs, and call the vet. I will start him up again. It sounds as though he has an infection and it has not completely been controlled. I am not a vet, so be sure to consult yours. Maybe you can start him up again on the meds and run it out for 3 weeks. This is my experience with bumps, and yes it's scary. One vet told me I had to take Owen to see a dermatologist and be tested for allergies, that why I got another opinion. Try him on an Ultra Allergen Free dog food, like Prescription, or what you vet recommends, but make sure it is Ultra Allergen Free. Don't throw your other dog food out, because over time he may be able to gradually go back to it. They have to give you a prescription for it. Buy a small bag and see how he does. Throw out all treats and raw hide bone. Only give Allergen Free treats. This will eliminate food allergies. (This is what I did with Owen).
