I am new to the weimaraner world but think they are beautiful dogs. We currently have a 6 month old chocolate lab and are looking to get him a playmate. Is this a good mix? Are there others out there that have a lab and a weimy? The other issue I would be a little worried about is the acclimation period for the 2 dogs to get to know each other. With the lab still being a puppy himself I am a little worried he will get too jealous. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

| I would wait until you lab is just a bit older. But check out rescue...we have a lot of wonderful dogs right now and all the hard work is already done!!! They are housebroken, spayed/neutered, etc. |

I don't think it matters what breed of dogs you make a pair out of... but people who want 2 baby dogs at the same time (myself included) are completely insane!! |

Yeah a few people on here have both. I think they'll make a good pair, but don't make the mistake of thinking a Weim is ANYTHING like a lab. They're very different breeds and Weims are not for everybody. Do some research for sure, there's lots of good information on here. I spent almost 4 months learning everything I could about weims before I decided to get one.
While you can find out a LOT about the breed by reading about them, the best thing I did was visit 2 local breeders that had several adult Weims each. It gave me an opportunity to see what they were like in person. I found them by going to the www.weimclubamerica.org site and looking at the breeders list. I think that's what I did anyways.
Welcome to the boards! |

Most reputable breeders will not sell a puppy to someone that still has a puppy at home. It is unadvisable because your 6 month old is not a fully trained adult yet. The rule of thumb is to wait until the older dog is at least 12 months, 2 years even better, and trained to your satisfaction. Also, another big reason to avoid having 2 puppies, unless you are very experienced, because 2 puppies overly and unhealthily bond to each other. They get half the attention, and become more dog focused than human focused which makes training more difficult. It can be done with the right committment but I wouldn't do it. I know I don't have the time or committment level to do it.
Here's a 56 page article why raising 2 puppies is a bad idea

| I can't even imagine trying to raise a weim puppy with another puppy around...I would LOVE to have another, but I would probably kill myself after the first week! |

| Tell me about it! Not only would I kill myself, the pups would lose so much, and the time is so critical that first year. |

My lab is 5 and my weim is 16wks. I would only have 2 puppies if I rescued another, I would not actively search for a puppy through a breeder. I would gladly rescue jager (on the rescue thread), but if it didn't happen, we're not getting another one!
I do not see a big difference between my weim and my lab at that age. Just personality differences, like children, you'll have some that are high strung and some that are mellow.
Hate to disagree with Junior on this one, but I really believe that if a weim is trained right, you will not see the uncontrollable hyper activity that people warn you against any more than you will see it with any other breed with high energy demands. My daisy is no more work, nor any more trouble than Goliath was at this age and I think he that both breeds (especially chocolate labs, they are nuts, speaking from experience) need a good outlet for energy and a good exercise regime.
One plus to having two puppies is they wear each other out, but it is outweighed by the negative that Anne mentioned, they will bond unhealthily with each other instead of you. There is no greater pain than a dog whom you have not properly bonded with being destructive....
Think long and hard before you get another puppy, a year old rescue may be more feasible before the lab is a year old! |

I have both a lab and a weimy....We adopted the lab 4 yrs ago when she was 5.
We have just brought a weim into the picture a month ago and he is 3.
Definitely no puppies involved in this situation,2 puppies would be a full time job,I would not recommend it.
Our weim is a rescue and I would not do it any other way. |

I totally agree. I never said Weims were uncontrollable. All I said was that he shouldn't go buy a Weim expecting it to just be a prettier (ok, I'm biased) version of his lab. Because they're very different. Yeah, if you train a Weim right he'll be a wonderfully behaved dog, but that's the difference, you can't train a Weim like you'd train your lab and expect them to behave the same.
I was just making sure that if he wanted something similar to his lab, that he should read up on Weims and make sure they're what he's looking for.
They'd definitely get along great though! |

How about rescuing and older dog while raising a puppy? Would this help with the puppy? I hope this makes sense, but I'm curious. I would love to rescue a Weim and I think Sophie having a friend would be a good thing.
Do older dogs help act like older siblings to help correct behaviors and set examples? |

It'll take some work, and there are things you can do to help, like introduce them the right way. Lots of people on here have good information, and there have been threads related.
One thing is to get to know the dog you're thinking about rescuing. If he or she is totally untrained it's no different than buying a puppy in that regard, you'd have to start over with the new dog's training anyway! |

| But did you have another puppy at the same time? That's the only reason I said that. |
