That is my concern. I figure a well trained dog that someone is just unable to keep would be okay. I hate the idea of a Weim not having a home. |

I have been training EXACTLY the same as I did with my lab and she behaves about the same, like a high energy puppy. I LOVE weims but there are breeds out there that are similar. My lab was on the wild side, a lot of energy for a lab, but they are still dogs. Just out of curiosity, how would you train them differently to expect similar behavior? |

How about rescuing and older dog while raising a puppy? Would this help with the puppy? I hope this makes sense, but I'm curious. I would love to rescue a Weim and I think Sophie having a friend would be a good thing.
Do older dogs help act like older siblings to help correct behaviors and set examples? |
When we got Gunnar at 10 weeks old, we had Scout and Silkie. Except for the normal potty training stuff, they trained him. He was housebroken very easily. And he always had someone to play with.
If you rescue the right dog it could be very good for Sophie and for the dog you rescue!!!!! |

i understand you want to make sure chris is making an informed decision and i agree with anne that two puppies require an enormous amount of commitment and it is difficult when they bond strongly to each other. however, i believe, you can train them both the same depending on what type of training methods you use. i have had 5 labs (three were rescues) and i haven't changed my methods. the rescues all came with issues that we hear on here everyday and needed the same firm expectations, love and exercise. just as there are laid back weims there are boisterous labs. another issue with multiple puppies is they need their own quality training time and that can take a big chunk out of your day.
that being said only you can decide whether you have the time and energy to add a new dog to your life no matter what the breed or age. it can change the whole dynamic of your household. |

I wouldn't expect similar behavior, that's what I wasy saying.
Good info peppernaei, you have a lot more experience with this than I do, thanks for sharing.
Regardless I think a lab and a Weim will make a great pair if you're ready for it. If not right now, wait 6 months and get one then. The way I look at it is no harm ever came from waiting to get a puppy, but getting a puppy before you're ready can cause problems. So if you're unsure just go ahead and wait until you are sure.

| My boyfriend has a black lab and my weim and the lab love each other. They love to play together. When they first got around each other they wouldn't stop playing until they were separated but now that they are used to each other they are great together. |

| Thanks alot for the help. Didn't expect this much of a response. I think I now understand the concerns with raising 2 pups. Stuff I hadn't really thought of before. Our lab is definitely on the wild side but is eager to please and learn. I think we will wait a while until he is a little more trained but I definitely think a weimaraner is in store for us in the future. I think the experience we've gained from having a rambunctious lab will help us with our next dog. |
