This weekend Scout earned his fourth leg, thus completing his JH title! It was a gorgeous day. Perfect to run the dogs! They had two fields running concurrently. The conditions were not the easiest. The cover was really think and the birds were tucking themselves deeply in the grass. And they weren't budging. Scout has not been on birds since last april. So he was WAY overexcited. It also didn't help that we had to walk down the road past the bird field and circle back into it. Scout wanted to go right to the birdfield and it took a couple shouts to get him to come to me. I'm pretty sure that he was thinking I was rather stupid for walking away from the birds!!! We then took a wrong turn and ended up with swampy land between us and the bird field. I decided I didn't want to take the long way back and cut right through it. Scout was more than happy to run through the water. We finally got to the field and the grass was almost waist high in some places. And the land was really uneven. I had my doubts we would find anything. Scout was running through the grass like a madman. He found a bird, and he paused, I threw in a stay command. And he had a really nice point. But trying the find the bird was rather difficult. Especially with crazy Scout doing circles around me as I dug deeper and deeper into the grass. I almost gave up until the judge encouraged me to keep looking. I pulled the tangled grass apart to the ground and sure enough was a bird tucked cozily into his little hiding spot. I tried tp get to bird to fly but it was having none of it. The judge said to just fire my gun and that would be fine. We worked the field some more, but we didn't find anymore. It was probably one of the most difficult tests we have endured. I was so happy with his performance. He scored a 9 in hunting, a 7 in bird finding ablility, a 7 in pointing and an 8 in trainability. I took a bunch of pictures and you can see them here. Its the first time I've used the long lense at a hunt test. I was fairly pleased!
The point!
The flush!
The shot!
The Retrieve to hand!

Congratulations, Scout! Those are great pictures, too. Such a beautiful variety of dogs (but I am kind of partial to the one with the orange ribbon).

| Did you do all the training yourself or did you use a professional(unless you are a pro)? I am finding it a little difficult to find time and patience with Norman |

| I answered in your thread, but we are severly novice at this. Many people have encouraged me to pursue it, but beyond basic obedience we haven't done anything special other than enter him in some tests. Check your local clubs: weimaraner, hunting club etc. And good luck. One and half is still young so I know what you mean by the patience thing. They take a while to mature. Scout's still a puppy at 2.5! |

Just to "chime in" in agreement with Emily, your dog already knows how to hunt, alot of it is learning how to work with your dog while he/she hunts, and some of it is fine tuning.
One and a half is still very young. At two my boy still had no clue how to work with me, or what I was expecting from him. Not that he couldn't hunt, he just couldn't hunt with or for me, and now at three he is ON and LOVES every second out in the field.
Now, another dog may be ready earlier on. Bitches seem to mature a bit earlier, IMO, and can work better with you earlier. However, that is just my opinion. |
