|
|
I have a 6 1/2 month old weimaraner and he has had soft to runny stool off and on for about 3 months. The first couple of times were due to some bugs in his intestines and the vet prescribed flagyl. Things cleared up but about 3 weeks ago his poops become soft/runny again. This time the vet up'd the dosage of flagly but it didn't seem to work. Now he initially was Wellness Large Breed puppy food and when the first occurrence happened; I then gradually switched him over to Orijen large breed puppy. I placed him on a bland diet of rice and chicken for a few days to rest his stomach and his poops became pretty solid; gradually adding some of his Orjien food back in; poops went from solid to runny in a matter of days, which we currently are at.
Now I've read that some dogs have issues with some food because they are too rich for their stomachs. I spoke to the vet and they suggested we switch over to Medi-cal gastro food which is made by Royal-Canin.
Has anyone else had problems with this and/or do you have suggestions as to what I should do. Other than Cooper's poop issues he is a very active and healthy puppy. |

If his poop got better with chicken and rice and got worse again with commercial food, I would suspect the food. Yes, this is unfortunately very common in the breed. You should let your breeder know.
Also have you tried supplementing with yogurt or probiotics? I would suggest that as well as a digestive enzyme supplement. |

| Originally on regular Wellness dry same thing, large cowpie stool. Have since tried various foods and found the grain free works great. We are currently on Wellness CORE Ocean variety. Was on Eagle Pack Holistic Select and that worked well too. |
