The following informatiuon is taken from http://www.fastdirectory.net/weims/1.htm, I came across it & thought that it was interesting
Retrieving
Because the correct Weimaraner is bred to be the consummate companion and hunting dog, retrieving from the water is one of the requirements they must pass to receive their Field Trial Championship. Unlike most other sporting dogs, the Weimaraner is required to “do it all”. Game birds such as ducks, pigeons, geese, pheasant and chukar are retrieved for the family table. The Weimaraner Club of America emphasizes this prized trait by offering titles in retrieving. Novice Retrieving Dog, Retrieving Dog and Retrieving Dog Excellent tests are open to any member and are just one more way to enjoy time with your favorite buddy.

Me & my partner took Busta now 10 months old to a local surburban park a couple of days ago where there was a oval & lake with reeds & lots of tree's around it.
Busta took of really fast in one direction running along the lake, we called her & got worried as she did not return. Next thing I see her 20 metres up the lake coming towards us swimming with a big water bird in her mouth, we called her over & she swam over to where we were & came out the water having trouble getting through the reeds but did it all with the bird in her moth. She droped it when we told her too, the problem is that is deffinetly not allowed there & u get fined, no one saw what happend except us.
It did surprise us how quick & quiet Busta was about the whole thing, befor we knew it she was in her glory & doing what she was bred to do. For us that was the first time we had seen a dog retrieve something live out of the water or do any type of hunting.
I will for now keeping her on a leash around those area's now that I have seen what she is able to do. |

| Wow, Sounds like you have quite the little hunter on your hands! That's impressive to catch a live bird! |

Yeah my husband and I used to live next to a man who bred birds Stupidly I didn't know much about the breed when I got them, and alot of his birds were hand-raised and used to be left out of their cages.
Needless to say that a few birds died while we were living next door to them - but thankfully they were very understanding and said it's what they're bred to do.
Having said that though, we did successfully have some hand-raised lorikeets as pets who lived in harmony with our weims and they never ever tried to touch them. Go figure!? |
