rescue dogs

Postby charisa » Sat Nov 21, 2009 12:20 am

I have to add more of my 2 cents. I have never rescued a dog before. I mean I have 3 kids 2 cats, 1 weim. I always thought that there must be a very sinister reason that dogs were abandoned. I felt that these were the kinds of dogs only the bravest alpha humans or dog whisperer types could attempt to help....boy was I ever wrong.

Let me tell you about our rescue dog. Her name is Haley and she surely is the sweetest dog in the world. She is 5 and was surrendered by her owner in an Ala shelter due to a pregnancy. She was picked up by the Weim rescue and brought to Charleston SC where she was loved and fostered. The wonderful people of the rescue group evaluated her, cared for her, and suggested her to our family. It was a perfect fit. We are all besotted with her. She is gentle and hopelessly devoted. She is well trained, housebroken, great with kids and cats, does not chew. She lets my 2 year old hug and maul her. I was nervous about bringing a dog home that was not a puppy, but I cannot find one thing wrong with her! I also want to say that I thought I could never love another dog like my boy Bailey, but I also fell hard for this one. Her endless need to love us all melts me. She even dances when I sing to her! I am never alone, she finds me. She found me, I found her and am so grateful to all the people who spend their lives helping these dogs.

So to all of you who are considering getting a weim, contact some rescue groups and tell them what you are looking for in a dog. Your doggie soulmate may be out there waiting for you to find them. I was nervous, it was a leap of faith, but so worth it.

I absolutely agree. Zoie is our girl.
As far as I can tell from her vet records we are family #3. We have no idea why she was given away when she was 8 months old.
She lived with a family until she was 3 1/2. They surrended her to LWR because they just weren't "dog people". I am so proud of them for realizing that and giving her a chance to go to a home that really wanted her.
She is the perfect dog for us. Aside from being a little barky sometimes she is such a good girl.
I walked one of LWR's rescues this week and he was such a sweetie. A bit of a puller on leash but so patient with me when I stopped walking and waited. I think I would have taken him home after a second walk. I am so pleased that he is in a great foster home now and just waiting for his perfect family.
Rescues are great. The fosters spend a lot of time learning the dogs and they do a great job matching them with the perfect family. It really is like eHarmony for dogs and dog lovers.
I think there was a plan for Zoie and us to end up together, she just had to spend some time with others first.
Thank you to all of you who foster and work so hard with rescues.

I've owned 5 weims so far. Three are or were rescues. Silkie was our second weim and our first rescue. We got her at seven months old and she is 6 now. Jake was our fourth weim and second rescue. He was 9 when we agreed to foster him. We fell in love with him and decided to adopt him. Jake was one of the most amazing dogs I've ever met. We had 2 wonderful years with him before he went to the bridge earlier this year. After we lost Jake we rescued Schatze...our little blue girl. Again, love at first sight.

There is something very special about rescue dogs. They seem to know.

There is nothing like a rescue doggy.
Both of the guys in the photo below came to be courtesy of petfinder.com.
The Dal's owner had been deployed suddenly and taken CJ to a "kill" facility.
Romy the Weimy had been dropped off and the person gave a bogus reason for not wanting him - I suspect they just couldn't afford him or something, and it's very sad. But someone had taken a great deal of care to teach him how to do things!
Well, those people's loss is my gain. I cannot imagine my life without these two.

All my dogs are rescues too. None of them have any issues beyond normal dog or weimaraner issues. This morning, Nina, who we've only had for three months, kept jumping up on the bed and giving me hugs... she'd lay down her front legs around my body and put her head on my chest and give me kisses. Rescue dogs are the best!

All of our pups have been rescues. 2 from Mile High and 1 from Wonder Weims.

My wife works with Mile High - they do a great job of evaluations, placements, and matches - she is on her way now to pick up a pup that has been locked up in a barn for a week, then off to the vet for checkup and shots then to a foster family.

A few months ago, my wife asked my mother to foster a Weim for the weekend, well Max has stayed for longer than just the weekend, and is now a part of our extended Weim family. :)

Most of rescues are really awesome. Then there are always those that are 9 - 18 months old that were "cute puppies" that have turned into big crazy dogs, which hardly know their names, have no manners (because they haven't been trained - not their fault) and know no commands. These ones may be crazy, but ... they just need to know the rules, get some exercise, get some love and they are good to go. Occasionally there are some rescues that are challenges, severe separation issues, waaayyyy tooo much energy, wanting to "hold" the kitty in their mouths  etc. but with some training and patience they usually turn out fine ... or they go to a family that is willing to accept and work with the issue.

We have fostered quite a few ... Julia isn't too keen on other dogs in the house, especially females. After a few fights and trips to the vet to get sewn up, we decided that we shouldn't foster with Julia around. Julia was actually a foster, she really liked my wife and we decided that she was a keeper. Julia has been somewhat of a challenge - she has some leash aggression issues and occasionally has a "meltdown" in the car but otherwise is very sweet to us and would no doubt take on any intruder to protect her family.

Edit
***********
My wife just came by with the rescue who has been locked up in the cold barn all week.
Poor guy - he was sad and scared - he wouldn't make eye contact with me and wouldn't even take treats. :( He will need some love, but will be just fine.

************
My heart aches for the pups who have been neglected or abused - we have kept 3 that were severely neglected or abused and it just rips my heart out to see that. One of them, you could see every rib and every vertebrae, hip bones and he had sad, hollow eyes that just looked right through you.

I couldn't agree more!! Rescue Weims are the best!!! I have had 2 and I'm pretty sure that when my first girl went to the Rainbow Bridge she sent my second girl to look after me!!! UNCONDITIONAL LOVE!!!!!!

I agree this all of you, I am thankful for this soulmate of a dog! She is currently giving us the sad puppy eyes and being exceptionally cute because she wants up on the couch and there is no room for her. There is, however a brand new dog bed on the floor right next to us. She will make her 90 pound self fit up here no matter what!

Thanks for rescuing.
I am looking forward to having a NJ Weim -meet up someday soon, too...

many of you know my 2 are rescues and I volunteer with TriState Weim Rescue. It's the most rewarding stuff I do. These dogs are just amazing creatures and my life is better because of tehm...not just mine.
