Recommendations for a meat grinder?

Postby dakotasdad » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:23 am

Any recommendations for a quality meat grinder?

Mrs. Dakotasdad has been wielding the Image meat cleaver and is starting to scare me.

I hear that the < $100 models burn up rather quickly.

Let me know if you find a good one. We bought one a few years ago at a sporting goods store. It was a basic model and it was on sale. It's had a lot of venison ground in it but it has never worked great. It clogs up really easily and I have to stop and clean the plates which is no easy or fast task. I'm going to get the meat grinder attachment for my Kitchen Aid mixer and see how that works. But I'd like to have a stand alone grinder that works really well.

We have this one from Sears. It is not an electric one but it does an awesome job. It has several attachments and is very east to clean up.

I picked up one like that Sears model for $4 from a Thrift shop, but i have yet to use it. I feed raw, but I buy my meat pre-ground, with the bone-in. I wonder how those meat grinders do with bone...

To grind meat with the bone in it you need a grinder that is 3+ hose power.

I was just going to ask about bone grinding. How much $$ is one of those?

I have an American Eagle commercial meat grinder. The bones go thru there no problem. It cost about $500. I'll give it you Kim, if you want it.

Did you say "give?"

YES!

Britta thanks you, and so do I.

We've been feeding her raw... whole parts. Hadn't been a problem until last night. Don't know why (does being in season have anything to do with it?) but she threw up her dinner in the middle of the night (eew) and her breakfast this morning (double eew). Dinner's puke was pretty processed but I could still see some small bone parts. Breakfast puke happened right after she ate it, so if I wanted to, I probably could have washed off the meat and saved it for another meal (triple eww). <--- no worries, I threw it away.

Long story short, maybe I'd feel better using a meat grinder.

Or maybe this is doggie's way of tricking me into giving her a warm hot shredded chicken and white rice in chicken broth lunch.

I'm interested in this also, I do the whole parts now but for convenience I'd like to have some ground on hand for less than $4.99 a pound :( A machine that processes bones is high on my list, just don't want to try two or three before I get one that is heavy duty enough and won't burn up. I'll follow this thread with great interest!

We're still chopping by hand ... I use a big butcher's knife and my wife uses the meat cleaver, we're still thinking about a quality grinder ... but, not yet ready to spend a lot on a grinder until we know that we are getting a good one. It sure would be nice to run a bunch of chicken through the grinder on the weekend and dole it out during the week.

Does this model work on bones? Basically, I feed chicken so would be taking whole chickens, cutting them enough to feed the hopper and giving it a whirl. The most dense bone on a chicken is the leg/thigh - could I feed in a drumstick whole and grind it?

I like Sears but the product reviews are lacking - I don't think most people buy the grinders for the use we are discussing and would think I was crazy if I asked about the ability to grind bone anywhere but on this forum.... :D :D :D . I also noticed that they HP wasn't listed for most models - is 800 watts comparable to 3 HP?

A good place to start research is google 'bone grinder'. Lots of hits and a way to narrow a decision.
Some warranties are void if bones are fed through. Some do fine with chicken bones, etc.
An example, http://www.northcoastmarines.com/barf_hardware.htm

E-bay?, restaurant supply, yard sales...? might have to be patient to get a good deal.

(i first searched 'bone crusher' and got head-bangin' rock bands  )

I just found a great family owned Italian grocery last week. All their meaty bones are around 50 cents or less a lb.
And super helpful. Very meaty. I'm not sure they want their bones to 'go to the dogs' :D , but i'll see if they will do
some grinding next time. I'll ease into it once i get to know them.

oh, just noticed you posted that site craiger...
