|

Okay, I have been working on training Sadie for over a year and she is absolutely amazing, but her recall isn't that great. But it's also something I haven't worked on that much. I am still training Scooter the basics and he is doing okay so far. But the main thing I want to do is a recall for the dogs. My best figure is to train them to recall to a whistle sound. I plan on using chicken bait, which I have never trained on before, and have them come back to me at a sit before they get a treat. Does anyone have any tips on training with treats, training on a recall up to larger distances, and training with a whistle(which I have never done before either)? Also is a regular PE whistle okay or does it need to be a silent dog whistle?
Thanks in advance for any info! |

| The best way to train recall w/ a whistle is to get voice or hand signal recall down perfect. After that, overlay the whistle and eventually lose the voice command. It just takes repetition. A regular PE whistle will work fine or any other whistle you want to use, just make sure you can match the sound if you have to use a new one, or the dog may not respond. |

| Thanks h20fwlkillr. I appreciate the info. That makes a lot of sense. I didn't even think of the sound maybe being different and throwing off the dogs. I got a PE whistle and a 75 foot check cord so I think I'm ready to start on the simple commands first. I am trying to find some land to work the dogs on after I can get them to recall in the yard and the parks. |

Once the recalls were reliable at closer distances, we practiced long distance recalls between two people at the park - with yummy treats at random calls. I introduced a standard "Fox 40" whistle by calling and blowing the whistle - we also have a hand signal. It only took a few times for him to catch on and now the whistle is more reliable than my poor yell. I have been with a few people with different whistles and he catches on quickly that their whistle means to come as well.
You may also want to consider the cue that you whistle - one long blow, two short, etc - whatever you wish as long as you keep it consistent. |

How's the training going?
I know this post is a little old but, ditto what H20 and Peppernaei said! | peppernaei wrote: |

Agreed! I use one long blow followed by three short ones and it works like a charm. |

Thanks for the info. I thought the tip on the distinct whistle was a good idea. To be honest I haven't tried training too much yet. It's just way to hot for me to feel right working the dogs in it. Just the other day we were making breaking records in heat, and it's about 100% humidity too. I think I will wait a couple of weeks until we are over this hot streak and then try. I'm looking around for someone with land I can train them on. Hopefully in the down time I can find someone. |

I use my right hand in a sweeping motion across my chest (right to left). Sort of like if you were encouraging a person to follow you. |

| I raised my right hand up (high). That way in the field if Danni checked in (looked back) and saw my hand up, she'd return. |

I figured that would be what I would do. Right now I'm just trying to get Scooter to sit while he's outside. I thought he'd pick that up right away, but he just keeps looking around and giving me a face like "are you crazy! there's stuff to sniff and see!" |

That's our drop command which works well for emergencies at a distance. |

That's a GREAT idea! I can see why that would work so well... |

That is the signal I use for whoa. For return to heal, I use hand high swept down to my side.
It really doesn't matter what signal one chooses as long as the dog knows what is meant. |

WOW...it's a good thing we all don't train together! We'd have dogs "whoaing" "dropping" and "returning" to our sides with just one hand signal! ROFLMAO! |

Zeus is very hard headed and has some pretty bad hearing loss due to a deep inner ear infection my old vet didn't catch. He has to have the hand signals to understand what I want from a distance (can't hear me) However, he pretty much will only take instruction from me or my son. Drives my buddies crazy when we're hunting when they can't get him to respond to them. Part of it is he can't understand what they want, the rest is his hard headed ways. The only way he'll take a retrieved bird to someone else is if I tell him to. |
