Some success!!!
So last night was my first obedience class. Obedience versus Petsmart puppy class where we pretty much learned about how to clean their teeth and not much on training.
Anyhow...
The class was full of some pretty excited puppies. The trainer got right down to business and taught us the heel command. Oh, I forgot...at the beginning of the class she insisted that every puppy wear a Martingale training collar. So we start walking and Yoko was awesome! I mean so awesome that she totally heeled beside me. The classroom was really crowded so a few times we bumped into other dogs and she got a bit off track, but mostly she did fantastic.
Then on the walk home, we practiced heel the entire way...all 20 minutes and she did great. Then this morning she was wonderful. We missed our nighttime walk tonight cause of the rain, but I am really hopeful tomorrow will be good.
So is this just temporary? I am hoping not. It was so nice to have her beside me instead of infront.
Hooray for martingale! Hooray for yoko!

| Yes, this is the collar I use and works beautifully. Warning: it runs small, so even if the package says fits 15" neck, it would not fit over my weim's head, so I got the large for my 30lb 4 month old and it's just fine. It hangs loose and I can use it with her regular collar still on. I have also used it on my standard poodle and it works like a charm. I also like it because it does not look like a medieval torture device like the metal numbers. |

just FYI..
i am going to say that after the last bad walk with hooch on his martingale with him choking himself trying to get to the run away neighbors dog i was returning, i reverted back to the sporn harness to see what would happen.. big difference, and after a week, he is not limping. i think it is because now he is not growing at such an astronomical rate..
either way, i am happy it is helping.. and since i bashed it before, i wanted to say that for an almost grown dog, it may be a good solution.. but i still wouldn't recommend it for a puppy. |

Good the harness worked for you hoochmamas. I am sure at some point I will use yoko's on her again. Probably once she figures out how to pull with the martingale on lol.
I'm feeling kinda hopeful though...although the trainer was kinda odd, I got a good feeling about her.
On my way home for our evening walk...let's see how it goes.
Oh, and last night when I walked yoko in on the harness the trainer told me "you have absolutely no control of your dog". Can you believe that? Luckily I didn't let myself feel insulted and went in to class with an open mind.

yeah, i can believe that.. usually trainers are pretty snobby and love to feel like superior beings!
it is true, that with any harness, the dog has more control over it's movements than with a collar.. but you have to try many evils before you decide what works best for you.
Hooch will walk nice, and will always come back to a "Slow" at my side on request.. with a little help from a treat lure.. it's those instances when he completely loses focus.. like most weims do.. that i need the assistance of a training tool.. he is a big ol' weim pup, after all.. not a boston terrier.
let me know what works for you.. i am always open for new information and suggestions.
enjoy the journey.. |
