I am shopping for a new brand and goodness gracious, the PRICES around here are killing me! I was feeding Canidae and getting a 40# bag for $38. It just went up to $40 before the "switch" to the new formula/smaller bags, but still a decent price. I have been "price shopping" for a 6-star grain free or even 5-star with grain (doggies don't seem to have any bad reactions to grain--and personally, I am not convinced of its benefits, unless you have a definite allergy). Most of the foods I have been looking at (EVO, Innova, Wolf King, etc.) are $45-$55 for a 28# or 30# bag!!! With four large dogs, that is going to be a pricey switch for me!! I realize some of it is regional, but is that roughly what everyone is paying for those 6-star foods--close to $50/bag for 30# or less?? At that rate, I should just COOK my own whole food nutritious dog food!!

I wouldn't mind so much if I only had one or TWO dogs to feed, but with FOUR, well, it's pretty expensive!

"Good" food is what a dog does well on, not what someone rates it at for ingredients. Not all high priced foods are good, and most are no better than the inexpensive brands when looked at by how the dog does when fed them. Most dogs can eat just about any food and do fine.

Well, that's one way to look at it, fwlkillr. However, I am of the opinion that there is a LOT of CRAP that goes into MOST dog food (and people food, for that matter) and my dogs have sensitive stomaches. So for me, it's true that "GOOD" food is what my dog does well on, but I still won't feed them the cheapest thing I can find that is loaded with filler and not much nutrition. Nutrition DOES make a difference--in humans AND in dogs. I won't go by the price of food, but the QUALITY and what agrees with their tummies.

What would you call a filler? I don't think I've ever seen an ingredient that didn't have a nutritional purpose. ( with the exception of preservatives.) I also have never seen a dog food that didn't have all the nutritional value a dog requires. As for quality, unless one is there when the food is made, no one can say what the quality of any food is.

I wish it was cheaper, innova evo canned went up $3 a can, which is little too much for my student budget, so I get a large 38 lb bag of Wellness Core for $50 and feed 50/50 with raw, it lasts a while.

Prices are getting rediculous these days!!! But I agree that I don't think you need to feed a grain free diet if you weim has no issues. Save that tpye of fod if your weim eer develops and sensitivities. We swear by Purina Proplan. Not only do they have great food and great research behind their products but it's also very reasonable for a good quality food. We pay about $50 for a 40lb bag of food. Slightly more for performance or puppy. I have 3 weim mouths to feed and have literally tried everything from veterinary to grocery store brands and have always gone back to the proplan as our guys do the best on it

Good luck!!
