we went to the vet for tyra today because she has dark spots on her coat, and her ears are always dirty and we always have skin problems with her. the vet thinks it might be food allergies and she gave us this new bag of food to try for 2 months. it is called PRESCRIPTION. anybody ever heard of it?
and also how are they going to find out if she is allergic to something just by feeding her this food. i don't know i am a little confused.

| Our doctor prescribed prescription food for KD, but we mixed it with the food she should be taking and it has worked. It is an IAMs special food so her poop is firmer. She started getting it awhile ago, but now she tolerates the Eukanuba adult large breed so we are weening her off it. It is pretty pricey at $30 for a 15 pound bag. But she needed it for awhile. What we do for these doggies!!!! |

Is it Prescription by Science Diet? It usually has some initial associated with it to denote what it is for.
Lots of people on the site recommend grain free to help with the ear infections and skin problems. I feed grain free so Wilson can be gas free
If it is food allergies I would recommend looking into a good quality dog food for long term (personally I don't think Science diet is great). Not sure what they sell where you are located, but around here there are lots of "boutique" doggy stores that sell quality foods.
The dark spots on the coat seem to be seasonal and perhaps related to the coat turning over. There have been a few discussions on the site regarding that. Wilson has had them twice and I just brushed him lots and they cleared up. |

The Hill's get mixed reviews. It usually has a "code" for the type of diet. Is it the d/d diet - they usually have a single protein and carb like salmon/potato or the z/d diet - allergen free (that's assuming you have the same types in Italy as Canada)? It's common for vets to recommend since it is one of the few diets they generally learn about (and sell). My old guy did well on it for years but is now on a different prescription diet.
If you wanted a different diet you could try a single protein, low additive diet and see if you can isolate the allergy or visit a nutritionist or holistic vet. |

Hill's owns science diet.
Hill's sponsors lots of vet stuff, so a lot of vets will push the food. If your dog has specific health problems (kidney or heart) then the Prescription diets k/d and h/d will be formulated for that specific issue and are of great value.
If it works check out the ingredients and try to find a quality dog food similar.
Overall Science Diet is not a bad food, probably just not the highest quality.
Good grief, with everything going on with the foods, if ya find something that works...... |
