| I just found out that I am pregnant with my first baby. Any tips on how to keep my fur babies from becoming too jealous after we have the baby. Both of them have always been good with children but I am afraid it will be different when we have one at home. |

Congrats! How exciting!
If it were me I'd probably bring in a professional trainer beforehand to give me some tips. You could also do the Cesar Millan way and "claim" the baby as yours, and don't let the dogs in it's room, etc. Seemed to work on TV. And certainly make sure the dogs have a very good down stay for future use. |

yay!! i am an L&D RN.. feel free to PM me with any questions about the pregnancy/childbirth/breastfeeding/newborn care..
that being said, we usually recommend you bring home the first blanket the baby was dried with after delivery, and allow the dogs to smell it.. if they get rough with it, take it away..
when the baby comes home, make sure they are well exercised first.. introduce them in a room that the dogs don't "claim" as theirs.. and allow them to smell the baby IF THEY ARE CALM.. then give them a special treat that will take them a while to eat.. like a frozen kong..
it will be an adjustment.. but they will adjust.
make sure you still give them undivided attention and exercise daily so they feel included.. and try to remain calm so the dogs will follow.. discipline them with "calm indifference" if needed..
i remind myself those 2 words all of the time..
hooch had his first encounter with a young toddler in the house yesterday.. he did really well.. the baby even went in his crate!!
hooch just went in there with him.. then, ironically, my friend came over with her 5 day old! he got a frozen kong once he finished with his initial greeting.. then i let him sniff her.. when he "sniffed" a little too frantic.. i said "no".. made him lay down and stay there while i held the baby..
i was impressed with him.. he was also thankfully well exercised before she came over..
good luck and all the best wishes on your journey to parenthood! |

| ah ha... I've actually kept it a secret from all but one WA that I'm going to be a step granny in Nov. (Mimi). We went through alot of the clothes all my friends handed down to my stepdaughter this weekend. We let the dogs sniff through them all, since they have to be washed anyway. |

| We let ours smell anything we could think of before our first grand-baby arrived. We borrowed items from friends. We never had a problem with them after we did that I don't know if that is what worked or not but it didn't hurt. They are now close to Cameron, they make every step he makes when he is here. |

CONGRATS!!!
I sent my husband home with the hat that was first placed on Robby's head ~ and Jack thinks he's Robby's mom now. LOL
Robby is now 8 months old and he pulls at Jacks face, ears, etc and Jack just lyes there and takes it.
I always let Jack in the room with me as I was preparing the nursery, we let Jack lay his head on my stomach and feel the baby kick (Jack was AMAZED with my growing stomach and always felt the need to lick it, and at one point, LOL tried to shuv his nose in my belly button)
Then when we brought Robby home for the first time, we allowed Jack to be inquisitive (obviously while heavily supervised). I would hold the baby and allow him to sniff Robby and examine him carefully... and now Jack isn't jealous, he's actually quite protective.
Weims are a unique breed, and I think when given the chance, they'll become more "maternal" than anything else. Jack certainley has! He even sleeps in the rocking chair/recliner in our sons room while he sleeps. |
