|
|
| Hey all, I have a seven month old female, and everytime we put her in her crate, and leave she drools excessively.....Now when I say excessively I mean it. Usually her paws are all wet, chin to her chest is soaked, and there is a thick layer of drool in her crate. She also barks alot when we leave. We have tried puttin her in the crate a half hour before we leave, and pay no attention to her, and this does nothing.....if you have any advise please let me know. Also, she is very small, and we are wondering if we arent feeding her enough....she is almost eight months, and is about 50 pounds...we feed her puppy chow at six cups a day. thanks. |

| poor thing. is this new? has she been properly crate trained? or has she always had issues in the crate? there are numerous posts on here about crate training and SA.. you can search those 2 topics to start. i suppose i would need more details to even try and help.. |

Do more than 1 or 2 ribs protrude? I believe that Weims should be kept lean, so unless her ribs are showing she's probably okay. I would judge her by her look rather than the number on the scale. It does take some time for them to fill out too.
However, it could also be that she's not getting everything she needs from her food (and 6 cups for a 50 lb dog seems like a lot, to me anyways).
I'm sure others on here will say it too, but you might consider putting her on a higher quality kibble. |

I'm sure the drooling is stress related. Yoko gets stressed when we get in the car and starts drooling practically as soon as she sees the car. She will be soaked even before we start driving. Funny thing is she's fine once we're moving. I think she just hates city driving with all the starts and stops...makes her feel sick.
As for the crate do some searching on this site for help with getting her used to it. Out treats inside she can discover, not just when you are locking her inside. If she associates it with more fun stuff maybe she'll stress less.

My Pepper drools in her crate as well, not quite as bad as yours from the sounds of it, but she does drool, she has some separation anxiety too, so I attribute her drooling to that, being nervous/excited.
I would switch foods as well...6 cups a day?!??! Mine get 3 cups a day plus about 3-4 treats per day. I don't want to start food bashing, because whatever works for some may not work for others and what not, but there are definitley better foods out there.
Your baby may just have a severe case of separation anxiety. Talk to your vet or maybe try using some Rescue Remedy...its supposed to calm them. |
