|
My 15mth old female weim is a digger. I'm not sure what she smells, but she must have it! She'll dig a hole that is several feet deep and rather wide. I lost my Min Pin in a hole one day
I don't know what to do. When I catch her digging I tell her no, which she does understand, I swear she fully understands english. She waits until I am out of sight and then goes back to what she was doing.
Any suggestions? |

Did you ever think about making her a place that it was ok to dig?
There was a good article in Whole Dog Journal about that this month. The woman ended up making the dog a small area like a sand box that it was ok for him to dig in. He only digs in that area and not in the rest of her yard. |

Luckily I haven't had a digger yet but here my brother did a few things for his GSP. Putting the poop in the hole - apparently it has to be the digger's poop and not another dogs, he put chili pepper on the spot so that the smell was not as present, for the popular spots he placed chicken wire just under the surface to stop the digging once it was started and if he caught the dog in the act he shot him with water from the garden hose - I guess that only works if your dog doesn't like the hose. My MIL Sheppy barks at you to spray her.
I would redirect the dog's interest with a fun toy/bone and not leave them unattended until it was under control. |

| I have a digger too. My female Dalmatian was a digger and Abby has now dug up all of her old holes and started new ones of her own. My yard looks like swiss cheese. She digs the hole to her size, lays down for a while, then moves on to another area. I don't know what to do about her, but she does have a good time while she's digging. |

| Our dearly departed Deiter was a digger early on. Many large holes to repair! One day I saw him starting for China again in the middle of the back yard. I calmly pulled the hose to where he was digging and watched until he finished. He watched me with curiosity as I filled his new hole with water. I pointed to the surface of the water and when he leaned in for a closer look, I shoved his head to the bottom. He never again chose to dig another hole. |

| OH WOW. I don't think that would work w/ Storm. He's been trying to get to China as well. |

ROFLMAO!!! That's awesome! I should try that. So far the poop works great for existing holes but she still tries new spots. |

| Give him a place to dig. Make him a sandbox or allow only one big hole in the yard--and be vigilant to keep him only digging in that one spot. |

| Love the sandbox idea. You could also burry toys and stuff in it to discover. |

I cannot go into my backyard of a night as I would fall into 2ft deep holes ALL OVER the backyard and break my ankle.!! I will have to take a photo as its so bad but what shocks me is they dig these really deep holes but all the dirt is just gone ?? I can't even fill it in as its just all gone?? mad dogs!
I have heard about the sandpits, your supposed to hide treats under the sand and have them dig for them so they know that this is the good place to dig! |

There is a spray that you can buy at a pet store (ask the attendant) that you can spray around any area and the dog will stay away from it. Also strict verbal punishment.

| No diggers here, but if I filled a hole with water mine would think I had made them a swimming pool. |
