I took Ruby for a good solid walk today. We have struggled and struggled with no pulling on the lead. I no longer wanted to use the halti or any other type of training device - just the flat collar.
It took us almost 2 weeks of solid every day training but today we walked for almost an hour and it only took a few slight corrections of a tug of the lead and uh-uh for her to come back to my side and walk loosely on the lead.
No rushing
No pulling
Just plain old walking next to her ma.
It's like everything finally clicked for her (and me too!) I'm just so happy to walk her nicely and she looks so well behaved next to me. Makes walking just so much more enjoyable. |

Doesn't it feel great?!
Especially when other people look at you longingly, since so few people take the time to train it (or even walk their dogs, for that matter). |

I am perfectly guilty of having a terror of a puller.... I am jealous!
Honestly, I plain and simple lack the patience to turn around and around and around and you get the picture... just to achieve that goal...
On the other hand, I can get the little heathen to walk on a perfect heel with no leash... go figure that one. How can she be better behaved off leash than on?!
GOOD GIRL RUBY!!! |

It DOES feel great!! Today and yesterday I had a few of those looks from the old mates that work around here. I had one woman ask me what type of dog she was, then she commented on how calm she was!!! (Ruby was staring intently at a butterfly - what a fluke!)
Luna: You sound like me a few months ago.. that's why I just opted for the halti. It took us a while to get down the street with me turning and walking the opposite direction and wait for her to catch up, then turn around again. I looked like a lunatic zig-zagging everywhere but it certainly paid off. |

I never used the spinny routine to train it. That IS annoying.
I always (in the beginning, and here and there, now) walked with a pocket or bag full of tiny treats. I trained him on "walk nice" and "no pull". The seond that he yielded to "no pull" and slowed to my side when he got pushy, he got a quick, on-the-fly treat, without stopping, or breaking stride. Same thing, but with MONDO verbal praise, if he slowed, came back to me, and looked up to me for direction, ON HIS OWN.
Once he learned what was expected of him, I was able to phase out the "walk nice" command, and now can correct by saying "no pull" or just an "ah ah ah!", backed by a quick check (on his flat collar), if necessary.

Very smart... I'll have to give that a try, thanks!
Honestly, if Luna was the only dog I had to worry about the pulling wouldn't bother me so much. But with a puppy on the way in the early part of next year it would be soooo nice to be able to keep them under control without having to get them both "suited up" every time we wanted to leave the house. |

Yeah . . . I won't pretend to know what 2 is going to be like, because Slade gets walked alone.
Thor doesn't go for walks. The law (stupid BSL crap) requires that he wear a muzzle in public, and since he was never trained on one and the law came in after he was far from a puppy, he won't wear one. Just lies down and shakes when you put it on. Thank God we have a huge back yard, and he's uber lazy anyway. |

Sure - but despite his age, Slade is SUCH a good boy (no thanks to his awesome mom) - you already have a great foundation dog for when you're up for the challenge of adding a second one!
That really sucks about Thor... I couldn't imagine not being able to take my dog out for a walk... what BS. |

Awww, thanks! I'm trying hard with him, so that each subsequent step is easier for both of us, but honestly, he has to take a good part of the credit. He has been the most trainable dog I've worked with, and since day one, has always had a much more forgiving attention span than the typical puppy.
Plus, it doesn't hurt that he'd sit on a buzz saw if there was food in it for him. LMAO |

Yipee!!! Feels good, huh?
My older girls are reformed pull-a-holics, and man it feels nice to walk by people without the "who's walking who?" comment. |
