HI everyone! I just signed on recently and am very excited to see such a wonderful board of people who love their Weims as much as we love our Weim. I did have two pictures on my file if you can't see them, let me know. I hope I did it right. I do have one question for the day.
We are currently expecting our second child to be born New Year's. Our Weim is still very much a puppy, jumping knocking things over, etc. I am concerned that when the baby comes that she will see the baby as "prey" (I was warned about this from a stranger) or accidentally hurt the baby in some way. We have a dog trainer coming on Monday to our home, but have any of you experience taking care of a new born and training a Weim pup at the same time? We have a three year old son who gets knocked over frequently by our dog when Sophie thinks that our son has had enough attention and she wants some. |

Welcome!
How old is Sophie? I dont think she'll see the baby as prey, but she will need to learn that baby outranks her . The trainer you're meeting with will probably be able to give much more insight being that he/she will be there interacting with Sophie. Very good thinking, bringing in a pro !
Congrats on baby #2 ! |

My 2nd baby was 5 months old when we got Stella, she was 3 months old and already pretty good size. There was NO "prey" worries. Of course I am sure you know it is your responsibility to make sure your pup doesn't accidentally jump or fall on the baby being goofy as they are as pups. I think there was an instinct in our puppy of sorts where she knew that the baby was helpless but yet has the top spot on the "totem pole" of the family. It wasn't always easy, but all and all rewarding. My oldest son was 4 when the baby was born and he took pride in protecting the baby, you could use that as a tool, have the older child take on more of the dog responsibilities (food and water).A 3 Year old should be able to scoop food with a little help as long as Sophie isn't food aggressive or too impatient at meal time. It will create a stronger bond between him and the dog, and make him feel like a big boy at the same time.
Our new addition Jack is a big guy(80lbs) and is soooo rough with me, and so gentle with my boys, kinda of crazy. Good luck keep us posted!!

I don't have any experience with that, but it does seem that my weims are much more gentle with kids and older people. My oldest weim will try and maul me when I tease her with a ball, but sits and drops it nicely with our three year old neighbor. I'm always watching the proceedings, though, and my dogs accept me as their "leader" if you subscribe to that theory.
I think bringing in a pro is a smart idea. Welcome! |
