As Meredith, Danielle and h20 said, they are all gray except the blues. Usually experienced breeders just say "gray." For some reason other types of breeders tend to use the term "silver" and I don't know why.
Technically, gray is a dilute brown and the dilution factor has degrees of penetrance so can be darker or lighter. Since all shades of gray are so hard to define and really don't mean anything, most people just say "gray."

Oh and don't forget that they seem to change color from the times they roll in the mud and Wrench looks totally diferent right after a bath....even though he is brushed and isns't actually real dirty before that bath either.=) I have now seen a few gray's and they all seem just like Wrench and two blues in person...also pictures won't always help as the lighting but also one's computer screen changes colors up too and then we all often see the same color differently as well.

I love all the different shades of gray that they can become depending on the situation and /or the light.

When you see a true "Silver" you will know it. They are extremely light in color. They aren't that common to see.

My Ethan has produced several Silvers and it is amazing to see the difference in the coloration. Ethan himself is Grey.

When I sell someone a pup I pretty much fill out the AKC paperwork. I mark the color, the type of registration (check the limited if the pup is to be registered that way. I also HIGHLIGHT the box for the Limited if it is checked so that it cannot be changed), and my name goes on as a co-owner on all puppies. I also put my kennel name first in the boxes so that it is known that the pup comes from my kennel.

I read an old Jo James article that explains how there could be a different set of genes to cause the gray/silver color in Weims. Always have wondered if this could be a part of it. But usually there is just a lot of penetrance of the dilute gene and that causes the dog to be light. I've seen Blues that are really light too, and that's when some people unfortunately can get really confused. You rarely see it though.

When I got my first Weimaraner Heidi back in 1975, Silver-Fawn was checked on the color section of her AKC papers. There was definitely a little tan/brown in that gray. Schatzie was very similar which is why my wife called her the "Taupe Dope".

Here are a couple pictures of Heidi (scanned from photos). First as a puppy on our first camping trip to Mt. Baker and the second as an adult in the back yard.

No offense meant here, but please if you can refrain from breading information and particulars! I think it would be best as other breeders do here to talk about you dogs as family dogs and not in breeding terms. To me this is no different than a commercial add for CherrystoneWeims.
Thank you and I hope i have not upset anyone for saying this!

I think that was a bit harsh. I really didn't feel like she was promoting puppies for sale or any thing of that sort. I personally like having some lets say "experienced" Weim owners on here because they are an abundance of information.

I hope you're not offended CherrystoneWeims.

a difference of opinion and the ability to express each... sounds like a fair, honest, and open conversation to me.
personally, im not sure i would buy from someone who produces a large number of dogs, even if they take good care of them... i just dont think there is a need for large scale production. anyone who has more than a litter every couple of years makes me scratch my head a bit. not trying to attack anyone, it just something that i have come to realize will impact my puppy buying/adoption practices in the future... so maybe it isnt such a good ad, or such a good thing to be 'experienced' in everyone's eyes. what seems like an ad to one, may be a complete turn-off to another. different strokes for different folks. I dont think you can argue that either opinion is completely wrong.

The technical "colour" of a weim is so controversial these days. With all the designer dogs out there and difference of opinions for everyone I personally feel that people are free to call their dog whatever colour they like. I know the CKC does give a breeder several acceptable colour options when registering pups.( 10 to be exact) I think the buyer/adopter should be able to pick what colour they would like to call their pup because in the end, no matter if the pup is co-owned or not, the pup is still theirs!!!!!!!!!!

I know when I adopted my first weim I loved the fact that my husband and I got to choose the registered name and also the colour of our baby that would be put on their registration papers. made the whole experience that much more memorable

But this is good that everyone is expressing their personal opinions. this is a forum after all Smile
