We got Cloudybear's test results back from the vet today. I have to say, we were kind of wrong. He isn't allergic to wheat after all.
Here are the following things that our boy is allergic to:
Yeast(HP)
Beet(HP)
Corn(HP)
Rabbit(LP)
Turkey(LP)
Alder tree(HP)
Goldenrod weed(HP)
Bermuda grass(LP)
Orchard grass (LP)
Timothy grass (LP)
Cottonwood tree (LP)
Mulberry tree (LP)
Ash and Birch tree (LP)
House Dust and Mites (HP) <--my allergy test said the same...the war against mites is a never ending one!
HP--High Positive LP Low Positive.
Well....this makes life interesting. We have to figure out what to feed him now. And do they mean Brewer's yeast or just yeast in general?[/u] |

| Did you have the full range of tests done? I am curious as to the average cost? I was quoted $300 and that included food, environmentals, insects, and something else... |

Yikes! Lots of dog foods not only have corn & (brewers) yeast, they have beet pulp! In fact, just checked the label of one of the grain-free foods & yup, there's the beet pulp. What would inspire them to test for beets?
I would think you would have to avoid yeast in general...I know when they test us humans for dog/cat allergies, they have a mix of several different breed's danders. I am very allergic to labs & goldens, but only very mildly if at all to weims. (Hence our choice - they should have tested me for allergy to vet bills  !)Anyhow, I come out allergic to all dogs, but I know from experience it is really the oily longer-haired dogs that get me.
Maybe they would not go to that extent for yeast, but would you really want to pay to see which species of yeast? |

We had the blood allergy test done. It took 3 vials of blood and cost $300 for us. They tested for the Southern Pollens (we live in Georgia), inhalent panel (molds, dust, inside stuff pretty much), and Food panel (expanded is what the sheet says).
The only panel that tested for bugs was the inhalent--fleas, mites, and cockroaches.
Looking at it again--with a full tummy (hehe, I get kind of ditzy when my blood sugar drops on me)--I realized something. They never tested for plastic or other kind of bugs. I'm uh kind of disappointed by this cause Part specifically asked for plastic and probably should have asked for insects.
I'm not sure if the test that we got is the RAST, which I think is what I had done. If Cloud hasn't been exposed to it, I don't' think he will show any antibodies for it. |

Well, we didn't ask specifically to test for beets. Heh, to be honest it never even occurred to me! As for yeast, I doubled checked it and it isn't Candidae err....you know the kind of yeast that affects humans to. So I assume brewer's yeast?
Bah, I have slowly begun to look at dog food ingredients on petsmart in hopes to find something before we go there so as not to rush and buy something he can't eat.
Oddly, I'm allergic to animals--or seem to be--but Cloud never really bothered me. I have a chihuahua and a Chug at my mom's house and only my cat kind of bothers me. Maybe I can build immunity to some creatures? I know when I meet new animals I react almost immediately. |

I know lots of peopel that have built immunity with certain animals even though they are allergic.
I alwasy hear about allergy tests and the list is always super long. One thing that I noticed (and this is just observation) is that even though something comes up on a list, when teh dog is super healthy they an usually end up tolerating those things to them, but again, that is just observation. |

I agree. I think that Cloud's immune system is so tried as it is now--that it really doesn't seem to take much to set him off at all. I think once we get him some what stabilized--he will get better. I mean, I'm allergic to dust and and mites (and I think mold too cause when i touch it--i itch bad) and I'm ok unless we are doing heavy duty cleaning---or if someone is pulling up carpet and then I'll have an asthma attack. |

| I think core wellness grain free is mostly chicken. You could try that. |

It could be that they have added beets to the routine food testing because more companies are adding beet to dog foods. From what I have read on another forum, it can cause sensitivity or allergic issues for many dogs.
Can your vet tell you or find out what yeast Cloudy is allergic to? Jazz is also allergic to yeast, but it is malazzezia -- which is a type of skin infection that some dogs with allergies get.. and Jazz just happens to be allergic too, which intensifies that itching, redness, etc.
What treatment has your vet recommended? Will Cloudy be getting allergy shots? Or will antihistamines work for him? Any suggestions as far as baths?
I talked a little with a holistic vet about a raw diet -- she actually feels that home cooked is better, especially for dogs with certain issues such as allergies.
It looks like some of Cloudy's allergies are seasonal. With your climate, will there be a certain time that he will have more pollens around that he is allergic to -- or because of what he is allergic to, will the outdoor allergies be fairly steady all year? One thing the allergy vet mentioned last time was not to vaccinate Jazz during the months that are her "peak allergy months".
I hope this all works our well... I know it can be frustrating. |
