Not sure how old the 'right' age is... up until she was about 7 months or so we did our best trying to control her with just a harness, which didn't make her walk any nicer... she really was just choking less LOL
At 7 months we went through an obedience class which required this collar. At the time, I was terrified of the use of this collar. Having gone through this class and seeing the results I now believe in it.
However, this class was not for the faint of heart - "Pointing Dog Obedience" thorough our NAVHDA chapter involved basically just four different commands - Whoa, Heel, Down and Come - no treats allowed. It took me a while to buy into it - but I now have a dog that will listen to these commands because I say so, not because I have a pocket full of cookies. |

This puppy belongs to friend. She is about 5 months old and pulls so hard she chokes herself. We walk together everyday. Yesterday I let her walk Haus and I walked the puppy. What a difference. I actually like the sound of your class. Haus kinda listens, sometimes, always if I have treats, but not too much if I don't. That is why I'm going to have sitmeanssit come out and do a demonstration. We'll see.

| Do any of you have experience with the Halti/head collar vs. the prong collar? I've never tried the prong collar although I have a Halti. It works fairly well but Molly gets a little nervous when there's a distraction around and she fidgets quite a bit in the Halti. Lately I've been walking the dogs early in the morning due to less people and dogs being out and about - I haven't even been using the Halti because although Molly walks a little in front of me she doesn't pull unless there's a distraction in the name of a dog/squirrel/bunny/cat, kids playing/lots of activity going on around us. Eventually though I'd like to get her walking nicely in the evenings despite the many distractions. |

I used the Gentle Leader on Haus for a while and it worked pretty well. The only problem I had with it was that he kept lying down and rolling on the ground, trying to get it off. He just did not like that nose strap. I have a ton more control with the prong collar. I don't think it bothers him too much. He is always ready to put it on and go.

| I used the EZ walk harness with Gracie until she was old enough (around 8 months) to use the prong collar. It seemed to be a good tool for training a puppy. Although Gracie pulled less with the harness on, the straps that wrap across the dog's chest seemed to get in the way. I still use the harness once in a while, but I definitely prefer the prong collar. |
