Yesterday morning when I woke up I found out that Ace had went out to the garage and pooped..... a lot. ( he can't get outside by himself and didn't wake me, poor thing)
He had miserable, liquid stool all day yesterday. Since, he has been eating a mix of lean ground beef, rice and canned pumpkin. This morning it was slightly firmer (not liquid) And he's stopped trying to go every 10 minutes. He's been hungry and wants to eat, and he definitely still wants to run and play. Never tried to throw up or anything either.
Does this sort of thing just occur randomly? He's never had this problem, hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary......I'm getting to the end of a bag of Canidae All Life Stages and was planning on trying Innova next.
I'm going to continue with the rice and boiled meat for awhile, but I feel so bad for him. I hate to see him sick. |

I hope he's feeling better soon.
How long has he been on the beef, rice, pumpkin? Has he been on a beef based diet before? Maybe his system does not tolerate it well? |

aw poor baby... I hate when they're sick... I'd try something even more bland. chicken maybe? and lots of rice to bind... whatever you switch from Canidae to do it gradually or else he'll have diahrea all over again...
good luck and feel better, Ace |

| Poor Ace!!!! A trip to the vet couldn't hurt. Another member's dog go pancreatitis on Canidea, and I believe that started out with diarrhea. |

when on eof mine has bad diarrhea, i usually fast them for 12-24 hours, to give their system a rest. then start with rice etc.
it might be good to have him checked. |

maybe he got into something , could be anything really. I wouldn't worry since he still has an appetite and is active. I've given plain oatmeal for a meal for the runs and it's worked for us. just make sure he's getting enough water. hope the poor guy feels better soon |

Thanks for the well wishes guys, it's working!
Ace hasn't had a soup-poop today. Still a little soft, but getting better.
I went out and got chicken today to give him with the rice, thanks for that suggestion, Weimamama.
I had read the thread about the other Weim here who was diagnosed with pancreaitis and I was worried about that. (You read my mind) But, Ace hasn't been vomiting and doesn't seem to be in any pain. He wants to play and stuff. But, if his attitude changes at all, I'm taking him in to the vet.
We live by a good sized creek and we were playing in it on Saturday, I wonder if the water is contaminated? He most likely drank some while splashing around.... (?) That's the only thing I can come up with.
I've been giving him some chicken broth too, he really likes that!
He seems really into all this home-cooked stuff. |

Zuna got diarrhea and mucousy poop for about a week after playing at the beach for a whole weekend. (That's what I figured caused her lat bought of diarrhea). She had the same thing- soup poop, no vomiting, not lethargic, good appetite. Could be what it is. I took her to the vet, my vet gave me metronidizole. She was cleared up in about 4 days. |

Interesting.
Ace's was quite mucousy also.......
He gobbled up his chicken & rice this morning. He really likes it, it's nice to see him clean his bowl.
Before the runny poop situation started, his Canidae would just sit in the bowl all day until I guess he got hungry enough to eat it. Maybe he's trying to tell me something.
(ie "this doesn't taste good, quit giving it to me" ? ) |

Ugh.
Things were firming up nicely for awhile on the boiled chix + rice.
I decided to take him in to the vet just to be sure everything was ok, I was really worried about the contaminated creek water.....so they did some tests, no worms, parasites, or giardia (sp? - it's the disease they get from stagnant water...) He's vaccinated against giardia, but they said he could still get it, and it would just make him slightly sick...but that wasn't it.
They gave us some Amforal to take for 2 days and also some canned Purina food for digestive issues. I think things were better before I took him in, he's been having the miserable runs again. It sucks.
He's still eating like a champ and is very playful, no change in his behavior at all. I wanted to get him off the Canidae, so I started mixing in some Innova into the last cans of the vet food. I'm thinking I should go back to the bland diet again.....oatmeal, rice and stuff. I wonder what the heck is going on........ |

Poor Ace.. I hope his bum gets better soon!!
Scrbear11: Salt water does tend to give dogs the runs from what I've heard if they drink it. When we went to the beach early in the year with 2 labs and a collie. They all got the runs from drinking salty water by the end of the weekend.
Get better soon Ace!!!! |

Have you given any thought to going raw? This sounds exactly like what I was going through with Zeke until I switched him over to a raw diet.
I tried kibble by Canidae, Nature's Variety, EVO, California Natural, Royal Canin, and I think a couple more. The best he did any kibble was firm up for a day or two and then go right back to being gassy and having loose to soupy stool. He also smelled himself! He had that typical "dog smell."
Since I switched him to a raw meal by Nature's Variety his coat has become waay softer and more shiny. He now has consistently firm stool, no gas, and even the "dog smell" has gone away. Oh, and he poops waay less. Only twice a day now (max) and they are much smaller. |

Seems like alot of drastic change in his diet over a short period of time. (lean ground beef, chicken broth, rice, canned pumpkin, Canidae All Life Stages, Innova mixed in canned Purina food....)
I'm no expert, but I've done research and can say from experience with my dog that "new" foods need to be introduced very gradually into their regular diet.
When my guy came home we switched to a different food from what he was used to - we did it gradually and he still had the runs. |

Yeah, you're right about that.
The canned stuff from the vet was probably the worst. (poop-wise)
I had told the vet that I was boiling his meals (chic + rice or hamburger + rice) and the vet says 'well, you don't want to be doing that all the time....'
What about what's best for my dog, KWIM?
*sigh* |
