We came home from open house at school last night and Glacier was VERY anxious to go potty. After I let her out, I noticed a few drops of dark liquid on the kitchen floor. My first thought was ANOTHER UTI, so I cleaned it up and told Sean to give her a once over to see where it was coming from. Welllllll, not coming from that area. After Sean got a closer look (we then thought it was just anal glands) and trimmed up some of her fur, I witnessed THE grossest thing ever. A HOLE! And no, not the one that's supposed to be there - after he looked around online, we came to the conclusion that it was a ruptured anal gland. Took her to the vet and sure enought that's what it was.
Has anyone ever heard of such a thing??? Apparently, they can fill, and rupture outside of the anus! Luckily, it was a pretty quick fix and G was such a trooper! Poor girl-I felt so bad for her. She had her glands expressed (I always pictured liquid, but this looked like a long piece of twine/like a toothpaste-y type gunk - ew), he packed the hole with antibiotics as well as putting her on an oral one, AND medication for her eye (not only does she have a catarac in one eye, but an infection too). My poor fat old lady .
Experience on this, anyone????????? |

Yeah, anal glands can become impacted and rupture. Not pretty.
Your dog will have to have her anal glands checked/expressed regularly for the rest of her life....I would suggest you check them weekly. It is really simple, once she has healed up..... |

| Yep. She goes back in two weeks and we'll take it from there. Weird thing is she's 11yo and NEVER had any anal gland problems before this. |

| My Pug has major problems with her anal glands and the vet recommend giving her Metamucil once a day. It does help. Pumpkin really helps too. |
