After being on vacation for 10 days and leaving Marley with mean old daddy, Marley needed some sprucing up.
I took her to the dog park for an hour, let her play in the water and roam around the grass until she dried. We then went to petsmart to buy some new oatmeal shampoo and a chewy bone. And at home I trimmed her nails, gave her a bath and cleaned out her ear. She developed an ear infection while I was gone which my fiance didn't bother to tell me about He says he cleaned it out a couple times, but there was medicine in the drawer that would have cleared it right up.
Later that night I noticed she was limping and I looked at her paws and all the skin is missing off of the big pad on her front foot. The other looks like it blistered, but the skin didn't come off. Her back paws are fine. I didn't notice it when I was doing her nails, but I guess it must have been blistered.
We guess it is either she jumped on the stove when it was hot (although her toes aren't burned), or some kind of infection related to the ear (I don't think she would lose the skin). I can't imaging it would happen just from roaming around the park. Any ideas?
Sorry for the long post, but I didn't want to leave anything out. |

My Lab shreds his pads every summer!
It always happens when we go to my parent's house ....we hang in the pool and Seamus does laps around the yard, they have a retaining wall that has stones and during his laps, he must tear them on the rocks.
All I do is keep him on rest ...I did have to take him once to get some antibiotics so he didn't get infected. I made him wear socks too! |

| Anyone know what I can put on it? She doesn't seem to mind, but I hate not being able to walk her and it breaks my heart to see her limping around the yard. Will the other one fall off too? |

| My girl tore her pads up at the annual dog swim. I guess from running around on the concrete. She's done this twice now. I used Mushers Secret paw wax and a bootie for a couple of days, then I started putting Tuf-Foot on twice a day without a bootie. They heal pretty fast. |

| My dogs do this all the time espeically when hunting season starts and their feet are not conditioned yet. Mushers secret and other types of pad conditioners can help condirtion the feet. To heal faster, EMT gel can help, but I like fresh aloe best. |

| Thanks Anne, good to know. Do you use a bootie with the EMT gel or Aloe to keep them from licking it off? |

| I like to keep the area "aired out" but my dogs don't seem to like the taste of aloe so another bonus there. Everything else seems to be a treat on their feet so I just keep an eye on them until it dries. |
