Has anyone had any experience with this condition? Huck has it in both eyes...
| Quote: | | Distichiasis is the abnormal growth of an eyelash or several extra eyelashes. This congenital disease affects the meibomian glands along the eyelid. In some dogs, the position of the eyelash has not effect on the dog and it is likely to go unnoticed. However, if the eyelash makes direct contact with the surface of the eye, the eye may suffer from microscopic scratches and irritation. Over time, these scratches can become infected and may predispose your dog into developing a corneal ulcer. |

If anyone has any info they can share, it would be greatly appreciated! Apparently, Huck will need corrective surgery in both eyes to get better. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on his condition. |

| Wrench had his inner eye lid curl in and had to be removed ( the inenr eye lid, not the eye) and it wasn't a costly surgery....we got that done, the shampoo we needed and his sentinal tablet all for $199.99 , the surgery itself was only like $165...not bad...this was only 1 eye though too. |

| I had a rotti that had entropian(sp) where the eye lashes curl inwards. She had the corrective surgery done. The vet compared it to a person having a face-lift done to their eyes. She did great after and never had any problems. |

| My weim has distichia in both eyes also. (they aren't causing any problems so we are leaving them alone) I actually work with a vet who specializes in ophthalmology and we see this pretty frequently. The procedure itself is really simple...depending on your vet they either simply pluck the hairs out or they use a co2 laser and shoot it down the hair follicle to remove the hair. Sometimes they only need to be sedated and don't even have to go under general anesthesia! It's definitely a good idea to get them removed if they are positioned toward the eye because if they rub it could lead to a corneal ulcer and thats no fun! |
