Has anyone had any experience with this condition? Huck has it in both eyes... Sad

Quote:
Distichiasis is the abnormal growth of an eyelash or several extra eyelashes. This congenital disease affects the meibomian glands along the eyelid. In some dogs, the position of the eyelash has not effect on the dog and it is likely to go unnoticed. However, if the eyelash makes direct contact with the surface of the eye, the eye may suffer from microscopic scratches and irritation. Over time, these scratches can become infected and may predispose your dog into developing a corneal ulcer.

If anyone has any info they can share, it would be greatly appreciated! Apparently, Huck will need corrective surgery in both eyes to get better. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on his condition.

This can be very common in weims. Is your boy having a lot of discharge from his eyes and does he rub them a lot?? This condition does not always require corrective surgery. If the lashes are soft they don't usually cause much harm either than a bit of extra tearing eveyr now and them. However, if they are quite stiff and abrasive to the eye they can cause corneal ulscers and therefore would need something to be done. The surgeries to remove these extra lashes may need to be repeated several times as the lashes tend to regrow. I know MNAY weims with extra lashes that are not bothered by them at all!!!!! They can live a happy normal life with them and that is for most cases. So if Huck is not having troubles I would just wait to see how he grows. Those lashes can also fall out on their own as they grow up too or get lesser in number. I have seen that where they become less and less irritating as the dog gets older. Some weims have have MANY extra lashes on both eyes and both upper and lower lids others merely have 1 or 2 extra lashes. feel free to PM me about this. I have a ton of information and might be able to save your boy an un-neccesary surgery!!! Your breeder should be made aware of his condition because it will help them with future plans for breeding. If my weim were to have any issues I would rather it be somehting like extra lashes that can be very managable. I know some breeders have congential or hereditary guarantees for their pups so I would contact the breeder regardless. The deserve to know too!!!!! Maybe they have expereinced this too with other dogs in their line?

Best of luck!

Hii! Misty came to us at 8 mnths and was always squinting. She had lots of extra eyelashes requiring surgery. The eye specialist told us it sometimes takes two or three goes to get them all out which it did. They were great charging reduced rates each time. he explained its like a human having a loose eyelash irritating your eye but magnify that feeling so she must have been in such discomfort. No complications after but great to see her beautiful big eyes!Apparently it can be in the breeding line. Good luck!
