| Zehen seems to be expressing his anal glands himself frequently. Like daily- or a few times a day. I can smell it, that nasty fishy smell (I know that smell after working at a vets office). I'm wondering if this is just him, or something in his diet that's doing it or if it's something I should be concerned about. He's had hard solid poops. Any ideas? |

| Maybe he is not expressing them completely on his own? Is it possible there is some infection? |

Gotta love 'em!
My dog has been having this problem lately as well, it is disgusting. Anal glands are normally expressed when the dog poops, if they have normal solid poops, it presses on the glands on either side of their hole and the anal juices are expressed (sorry to get graphic, butt don't know how else to talk about it). Wilson has been having diarrhea off and on for the last few weeks, so I assume that is why we are having a problem.
Your dog may have some sort of blockage or infection. While the vast majority of dogs express on their own, there are some that need regular maintenance. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones that has a dog that needs regular maintenance!
You can try to express yourself, using tissue and squeezing the butt, or take it to a groomer or vet tech and pay to have it done! Such fun..... |
