Since we've had our pup, we've noticed that his eyes get really red and irritated, especially when we're outside. At the beach, his eyes fill will sand, and then he'll have a mucous discharge for a few hours. Even during the day, when he's inside, you can see a little of his inner lower eyelid.
We've talked to our vet and looked online, and it appears that our pup has ectropion (the opposite problem of entropian, where the eyelid turns in and the eyelashes rub the cornea). Ectropion is the turning out of the eyelid and can cause exposure problems. Dirt and other pollutants can get in the eye, making it red and infected.
The vet tells us that this can be corrected with drops and monitoring, but I've read that sometimes this needs surgically corrected. Does anyone have any experience with this disorder? Any tips to keep debris and dirt out of his eyes, to prevent them from getting irritated?
Any info would be helpful! Thanks. |

I'm sorry you dog has this eye issue. Sounds like it could be painful. Are you going to use the drops?
Have you thought about trying Doggles? http://doggles.com/doggles.html |

those are adorable! and probably a good idea.
As far as our breeder goes, I'm thinking I need to contact her and let her know of the problem. This appears to be a genetic disorder, and other puppies in the litter may have this problem - I'd like to know. Pip was the runt. Obviously, this is a fairly common and non-life threatening issue, but it's still probably going to require minor surgery to snip the excess tissue away from his eyes, and having after paid this breeder quite a bit of money, I'm a little annoyed. |

That would be really nice of you to at least let your breeder know what troubles you have run into. The other pups may not have it but it would certainly help for them to know what they produced and may help with future plans for breeding!! Breeders learn from their puppy owners. if they never hear from you they never know if they are breeding in the right direction |

| Your pup looks like he is very young in his picture. I would take him to a veterinary opthamologist to have him checked out. Many times the pup's eye socket has grown faster than the eye itself. The eye will catch up in size many times. As long as pup does not have entropion I would wait and keep flushing the eyes out. I had a pup whose eyes would tear. I took her to the specialist and she told me that dirt was getting into the pup's eyes because the eye hadn't caught up. Sure enough the pup outgrew the situation. |
