| Has anyone else had a wiem that drinks salt water? We live in the mountains close to fresh water that Brady can drink. We just went to the beach last week and he drank salt water every time we took him on the beach. all of the other dogs knew better. he got sick every time but still wouldn't stop. We called our vet who said if he was to keep doing it he could have kidney problems. after the second time he did it we had to stop letting him off leash on the beach. |

| I live at the beach. Mine don't drink the water, but inevitably they end up with diarrhea due to the salt water because they go swimming. Kidney failure? Never heard that... I know they can easily get dehydrated if they drink too much and then get diarrhea. Just bring tons of fresh water with you to the beach and make sure you offer it to them after every swim |

One time I went to someone's house and their dog constantly swam in and drank out of the salt water pool. I don't think those are as salty as the ocean, but he didn't seem to have any problems.
Saltwater is dangerous because it can quickly dehydrate a dog or human. Next time you take your dog to the beach bring along plenty of freshwater and if he drinks from the ocean encourage him to drink freshwater to balance out his salt to water ratio and allow his cells to function properly . |

I've tried to prevent the consumption of salt water but Danni was sneaky...so she had the runs for awhile.
Make sure freshwater is readily available. |

Yea, unfortunately a lot of people don't realize that dehydration when severe enough, can ultimately cause acute renal failure... the damage if caught early enough is technically reversible... at least in humans it is.
With dogs I'm not sure. The problem with kidneys is ~ many people don't even realize they're having kidney problems until 90% function is lost, at which point they now have kidney failure and will be dependant on dialysis until they can get a replacement, and even thats not a guarantee.
I would definitely watch to ensure he stays away from the saltwater! |
