I read a post that got me thinking...how many of you have dogs with allergies? What are they allergic to? This is strictly for my own curiosity. |

We're in the experimental phase of possible food allergies... we think it may be grain. Our symptoms are eye boogies, constant yeast infections in her ears despite weekly cleaning, and incessant pawing at her face. It reminds me of how my head 'itches on the inside' when I'm having an allergy attack.
After discussing it with our vet, we decided to try going grain free. We're about 2 weeks into feeding her Wellness CORE and I think she is doing very well. Her tummy is a little gassy... could be from all the excitement lately (foster dog, lots of training nights, etc) or it could be the food... poops are solid though, so we're keeping with it. I have not seen her paw at her face in about a week...
To further complicate things, we know red meat and/or lamb do NOT get along with Luna's tummy, so we're stuck with poultry-based.
Still in "to be continued" mode... |

We have eye goopies here as well as his eyes are circled in pink as well as belly itchies...we are in the process of a food change to see if this helps..
We will be going the other way with food from chicken to lamb... |

Bella had persistent red itchy paws, eye boogies, and was constantly scrathing her face. We switched to grain free and it's mostly resolved. She still scratches her face some but not very often.
Our little foster, Gracie Mae has got some allergies that grain-free is not fixing. She has bumps all over her shoulders this morning. So, I am going to have to start trying some different foods... |

You guys rock! Lamb seems to be a lot better for dogs with allergies, and I've heard people say the grain free is helpful. After all, dogs are carnivores, right? |

Our girl has bad allergies to almost everything you can imagine outside. She is also prone to staph infections which only an antibiotic can cure (sounds a bit like what the foster may have in the post above.) She is on allergy shots once every 14 days, a grain free food and yogurt. As for the yeast infections, I suggest plain yogurt. It works wonders. A TBS a day keeps the yeast away.

Jazz is allergic to (that we know of):
Ragweed, grasses, dust mites, cocklebur, sorrel, goldenrod, marsh elder, maple, aspergillus, penicillium, cat dander, feathers, tobacco, wool, moths, fleas, malassezia (yeast) and human dander.
She has not been tested for food allergies - but we are going to try Wellness Core Ocean (changing from Natures Variety) and see if that makes any difference in her sypmptoms. |

Luna got yogurt, kiefer actually, every night for supper... it was not helping! With the switch, we've decided to discontinue the use of the kiefer until we see how she's doing on the kibble alone. Plus the new food has probiotics in it already, so we may not need to supplement any longer.... another part of the multi-faceted "to be continued" |

Did you have blood tests or intradermal tests done to know what your girl is allergic to? Jazz has had both. The blood tests sent to a company in CO and then about 2 years later, the intradermal through a dermatologist Kansas City. She gets her shots no more often than every 2 weeks, but can be farther apart if she is doing well and not itching too badly. She's been doing better on the new allergy shots, at least we think she is.
She is also allergic to yeast (infections) -- so when her ears get bad, they do so very quickly.
But -- she loves her bath! We can just ask if she would like a bath and off she trots to sit outside the bathroom door and wait.
We're going to try Wellness CORE and see if that helps her some too... and add either yogurt back into her diet or try kifer. |

| The only thing that I can think of is Gunther is allergic to dairy. We did not experience it, but one of the shelter people told us about it. |
