Hi, we just adopted our first dog, a beautiful weim who is 4 months old. She came from Alabama to Michigan and now to our home in Toronto. Yes we are crazy to have a weim as our first dog, but we're loving every minute.
First off I want to thank the amazing folks who run the great lakes weimaraner rescue. Special thanks to the foster mom of our Yoko who took such good care of her.
We are just getting to know our little Yoko, but so far she's not very happy with a leash. Lots of pulling. We will probably try a harness or halti, we'll see. Aside from that she is happy as can be, even in her crate at night.
Anyhow just saying hi. Looking forward to reading all the valuable info on this site.

| Welcome! Try a prong collar. I'm telling you I didn't want one until I tried everything else on Duke and nothing helped! I wasn't going to use one with Gracie (haha) but do now. Just yesterday my daughter told me that her 9 month old boxer was pulling like crazy. I said get the prong collar it's worth every penny. Last night she got one and took him for a walk. I sent her a text message and asked how it worked. Her reply was one word "magic". |

Now I must add that I think 4 months is just a bit young for the prong collar. I actually started Duke on it at about 5 months and Gracie at 6 months. They are not meant to be used with constant pressure or choking of the dog so understand how to use it correctly first. For now I would probably just practice on a regular or harness type collar and stop every time she pulls or change direction. Chances are you'll end up with a prong collar though Gracie was absolutely crazy on a regular collar. She would jump and hop from side to side and was nutso. Part of that was just getting her used to being out and about so you still need to get her used to the world. |

I wouldn't use a prong collar yet as she is young and new to you. I would try other methods first like stopping when she pulls and not starting again until she comes back to you and "positive walking" practice in your home or yard and treating when she is at your side. I used a gentle leader for training but now I use a regular flat nylon collar.
And since she is your first dog you might consider a puppy obedience class. A friend of mine in TO likes Who's Walking Who (www.whoswalkingwho.net). I'm not sure if they would be close to you. I would suggest going by a place and asking if you can watch a class to see if you are comfortable with them. If you decide on a prong collar or some other tool, I think it is best to still get a lesson on how to train with it and move beyond it. |

Congrats on your first Weim! Can't wait to see pics.
I don't think I would use a prong collar either, but that is just me and what we have learned going to the training club. We walk them on a regular training collar there and you just need to try to walk with a treat by your side to get them used to watching you and staying by your side. If the pulling is bad try switching it up, they pull you turn around and walk the other way and leave them wondering what you are doing. Just takes time and practice. Best of luck! |

| thanks everyone for the suggestions about the collar stuff. i am wary of the prong collar and will hopefully have success before having to result to that. we actually visited a pet store today and picked up a "lupi" - i guess its a sort of training harness... and i think it might be working ok. we took a walk in town today and yoko was not happy - but it wasn't due to the harness - i think she was just a little overwhelmed by all the people, cars and noises. boy its going to get hard to get used to all the people who want to come up, pet her and ask questions! |
