I'm trying to teach Darby the drop it command. She clamps her jaw so tight, it's impossible to get anything from her. We don't hunt, so it's mainly just for playing fetch and when she has something she's not supposed to.

Do you have a treat in your hand for replacement? Try it 5 times with a treat and then the sixth time without.

Hope that works.

Cut a slit in a tennis ball, and put the treats in there. Rattle the ball to get her attention, and when she fetches and returns with the ball she will have to give it up to get a treat. It works really well if you use something smelly like liver treats.

Her favorite balls are the SKLOOSH ones, or whatever they're called - the ones that are used in the pool and splash. She a water NUT! And it's SOOO great when she retrieves it, runs back to me, and chomps down on it right over my lap (picture a soaking wet lap Rolling Eyes ), then won't give it up. Yeah, really really great Mad !

I haven't tried the treat thing with her - she is INSANE with food and has a difficult time focusing on anything when food is involved (weirdo)! I'll try both of those ideas today. Thanks!

Reach around and grab that flap of skin in front of her hind leg and pull. Or simply push whatever it is that you want to get out of her mouth farther into her mouth. Make sure she can see your eyes and knows that you mean business. And always remember your first line of defense: treats. (I don't condone being rough with your dog, but remember they are way tougher than we are! They play rougher with each other than we'd ever dream of!)

Ruby's good with dropping balls - now. LOL
We used the old switcheroonie technique - what PamK said.
You simply show her the treat when she brings it, then every second time once she gets the hang of it so on and so forth.
She still occasionaly wants to be a brat and not drop it though.. Rolling Eyes

Jack finally understands drop it as well.

Along with the treats ~ LOTS of praise!

Jack LOVES to hear what a good boy he is, so when we'd switch I'd exclaim "Oh, good boy!!! Jack is such a good boy to drop it!" as I'd pet him. By doing this, Jack was trained by the end of the day.

Anything for praise with him. LOL He likes to have his ego stroked Wink
