|
|
We just got our first Weim. My wife always wanted one so we decided on a blue female (we are not going to show her). She is 8 weeks old. We picked her out while on vacation at my parents but cannot get back to the breeder to take here home for another week.
My question is, if we decide to take two, what sex should the second dog be if our first is female? Does it matter?
Thanks,
Mike |

Personally, I don't think so. But there are some out there that will recommend having one female and one male due to personality clashes.
We're looking at getting another male in our house. I think its all in how you socialize your dogs. But thats just my opinion. |

Make sure you do a lot of research before getting two puppies. I read an article in a weim magazine that stated that 2 puppies from the same litter without proper training, socializing and an in charge owner can bond with each other versus the owners and it can cause problems later. I personally had a co-worker who took home two because she couldn't bare to separate them and they had many issues with training. They eventually got rid of both.
Don't mean to be negative, having one puppy (and I do) is a lot of work and I can't imagine having two at once. I have always believed that it is best to get one trained properly before getting a second. |

There are definitely a lot of negatives to raising two puppies at the same time. And no, they do NOT have to be from the same litter, for these problems to happen. Two young pups together in the same home get very bonded to each other, and much less so to their owner. Meaning they can be MUCH harder to train, because they don't look to the owner for any direction. Two puppies at the same time can be way more than twice the work. It can be nearly impossible, unless you are a very experienced dog owner, and intend to do LOTS of things individually with each pup. Otherwise, they will never be well adjusted, independent dogs.
Here is a link to one of hundreds of articles on the internet about why raising two puppies at the same time properly is extremely difficult.

Thanks for all the info on raising two puppies. I will probably lean against doing so. I had two labs but waited a year before I took on the second one. It worked out well that way.

| I would strongly advise against getting 2 puppies and especially the same sex. You are asking for a lot of hard work, and raising 1 Weim puppy is hard enough! I'd say the first 2 years of raising a Weim pup is very very time consuming, and I would never want to do 2 at the same time, I think I'd die of exhaustion (and I'm fairly Weim experienced...) Get a feel for what it's like to have a Weim pup before making this decision.... |

| I added a male pup to a house with an established male. It was a rough 2-3 closely supervised days. A couple years later the younger one is still a nut job and the older one just looks on in total amusement, disgust, dismay or approval, depending on the day. I am interested in a third but it would have to be a female. I have had enough of the pissing contests. |

| I agree with everyone. Definitely do your research. Two puppies from the same litter can be very challanging. They say it is difficult to train them and you will probably have to work with them seperately. Also one will probably be the more dominate one and try to take over. Good Luck. |

We decided to wait a year before we get a second. This will give us a chance to train Margo.
By the way, we pick her up tomorrow! |

Congrats on the new pup!!
You'll be so much happier since you've decided to wait. Training a puppy is SO time consuming. I really wanted another Weim puppy all last fall and winter. I almost got one but I'm glad it didn't work out. We just got a JRT pup and she's a handful. I'm just SO glad that Holly is pretty well trained at this point (not that she's an angel by any means, she's still an adolescent ). It just makes life that much easier. |

| Well I have two puppies! Well they are going into adulthood now but they are only 3 months apart in age. We don't have any bonding issues whatsoever. It is a huge amount of work though and I keep thinking that things will calm down in a couple of years or so. I can't believe that Duke will already be 1 next week! It has gone by so fast. But I agree, unless you have time to spend with each one individually I would not do it. One Weim puppy is a handful and two is just plain crazy! My husband and I do separate the dogs alot though (he'll take on and i'll take the other) and Duke was already very bonded when we got Gracie and Gracie is bonded to me like glue! Definitely no problems with them bonding with each other more than us, but the training part can be a pain. It just doesn't work for the most part, trying to train them together so I have to take one out and leave the other and of course the one that I leave behind gets very very upset. And when they are flying through the house crashing into walls and knocking everything in their path over along the way it can get very very trying. All in all I'm still glad I did it but don't know if I'd ever have the energy or desire to do it again! Trust me, your girl will be enough! |

I totally agree with one puppy being alot of work. Still working on getting the first trained properly before even considering proposing the idea of a second to my husband. |
