We are still having a terrible time finding a food that works for Jasper. He is one year old today Very Happy , and we still havent found anything that really works for us. He does do great on his science diet, but I am not too impressed with it. We have tried solid gold, canine caviar, nutro, canidae, and have just given up on wellness. We have transitioned jasper from his science diet to wellness over a month, his poop looked good until we got to a 25% SD and 75% Wellness. After that they started getting loose and on just wellness his poop is like water. I think he is sensitive to protein, but I am not sure. Has anyone found that "miracle food" that is great for your dog but easy on dogs sensitive to protein? Any suggestions would be awesome!

Well, as far as "miracle food", I got nothin. But I am convinced that Kam had IBD. It was recommended to me that I try Seacure - it's a digestive aid made of whitefish. I bought it online, put 2capsule in with one of his feedings and the difference was AMAZING! The gas disappeared and the poops were firmer and less frequent. A big bottle of about 150 caps was $25-ish. Just google Seacure and several places to buy will pop up.

You can also search "seacure" on the forum - I've talked about it many times (I think Anne recommended it).

So do you think I would be better off buying a fish based food? The people at the pet store said that it is more likely to cause runny poops.

I don't know about that, but that's odd that they would say that. I'd think that it would cause runny poops if they couldn't tolerate fish.

The Seacure is actually a digestion aid....

this was in a previous post from anne.....

Honestly, I would try Seacure. It was developed for starving third world kids and made of out fish. This is so digestible that they get a lot of nutrition from it. And once the gut calms down you may see some better results with his regular food.

It really worked wonders for Kam!

It's just a suggestion, especially if you've tried several different foods without success.

I would try a single protein, single carb source food and try to narrow down if there is a specific protein he has problems with. Bella seems to have issues with poultry but, does well on red meats...

vishnu did pretty badly on ALL kibble.
canned wellness lamb or venison worked great.
now he is eating raw: nature's variety lamb, but he also does well on chicken.
i used to think poultry was the culprit, but obviously it isn't.

but if jasper does great on science diet, i wouldn't mess with it.

Maybe you could try California Natural. It's a dog food with very few ingredients. Having that much trouble I would also consider feeding a raw diet or at least a combination of the two. Raw in the morning and kibble in the evening for example.

Here's a list of ingredients http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=527&cat=4

This is a great site btw when researching dog foods. It has most all of the different brands right there, convenient for researching.

We have decided to give Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish a try. Has anyone else ever tried it or heard anything good/bad about it?

We used to feed Jazz Natural Balance and she did fine on it. I think we switched because the store was out of it a couple of times... during the recalls when people were buying it instead of what they usually bought I think.

The tech in the office where we take Jazz about her allergies has a Lab with allergies. She told us that's what she feeds her Lab, and he does great on it. Before he was itchy, thin coat etc, even with the allergy medication -- once he started eating the Natural Balance, he's been doing much better.

My dogs did very well on Nutro Ultra. For some reason it just worked...and we've tried just about everything (b/c i'm neurotic, not b/c of allergies!). Their skin looked great, poos were normal, and they had a good amount of energy. Even tho that's not the best food out there, we came back to that almost every time. I switched to raw about a month ago and that's truly been a bigger difference than I expected! And now we're in a routine, so it's not so bad.

disclaimer is that I have never dealt with IBD or any type of allergies/sensitivities. And my dogs are so not picky it's revolting. Very Happy

What creates firm poops for one dog, may not agree with another dog and cause the runs.

Natural Balance is a good food. So is Innova EVO. However, not all dogs will handle these foods well, which is true for about any food out there.

You could always try a Raw/BARF type diet.

But the real miracle food is what your dog does best on. If your dog has nice solid poops and no ear or coat problems in Science Diet, then I wouldn't be overly concerned with changing it.
