I try brushing them, but it's obvious she's not accustomed to having her mouth fooled with (her "drop it" is non-existent...but that's another topic). They've been professionally cleaned in the past, but it's not at ALL apparent. We're just sitting here with a rawhide, and the blood all over it is scary (from her chewing it). She also has an INSANE overbite! At first glance, it's comical - but then after further examination, it's really sad. I'm trying to do some research on it and get advice prior to the vet giving me their opinion . Does anyone have advice or suggestions on helping clean up her teeth? I would NEVER have her teeth cleaned unless something else required anesthesia....... If I see anything on their teeth, out it comes! I hope, if we get our two new ones, the previous owners did that too.. They don't love it by any means, but they tolerate it. I try and use a fingernail to scrape off any plaque while they are resting, and that helps. Usually after that they give me dirty looks and slink off to their crates. Amy, have you ever considered feeding raw?? If her teeth are that bad, you will be shocked at the improvement. And her overall health will improve. When we adopted our late Simon his teeth were bad, tartar all over them, we just started with RMBs and they became so white, the vet couldn't believe it. Also, there is non-anesthetic teeth cleaning available now. Its available at my vet's office, so it is out there, maybe it is in your area too. I'm such a freak with meat, I'm not sure I could sleep knowing that Darby's drool from raw meat was flying around . If I started giving her a few chicken wings, how many at a time? Ok, say I decided she'd get them 3x/week, how many should she get and would that replace a regular meal? Or would I need to give her something else with it? I could probably learn to deal with a few wings, but good doG I could NEVER handle organs (oh it grosses me out just typing it )! Well the main thing that i have learned with teeth is that it is food/diet related and kibble is what causes the teeth to cover in the sort of brown stuff. Try giving her actual cow knuckle bones (you can even find these at Petsmart or at your local organic pet store) or raw meaty bones once a day. You should see a dramatic change. Rocky was on kibble the first 6 months of his life and i had to brush his teeth every couple of days bc i kept noticing the brown film form on his back teeth, not that he is on the raw diet and has to chop bones i never have to clean them. I still do though just to make sure he knows that i can! I would check with the vet as well though just to make sure its not periodontist (i think that is what its called). We have a Dogo Argentino that hangs out with Rocky once in a while and his teeth looked just awful and it ended up being periodontist. She has AWFUL teeth, poor thing is only 3-4 years. I called the vet that has the contract with the humane Society to see if we could add on a dental while she was under. They wanted an additional $400 !!! I called around and that is about the going rate, but still, you would think that if the dog was under already and has not even been adopted yet and is being adopted by 2 seniors!!!! So, I got on-line and ordered a dental hand scaler and plan to get busy! Cost me $3.75 and I ordered 3 (they had a $10 minimum order). Hopefully she doesn't mind her mouth being handled Maybe Darby will let you do a little at a time? I am not sure what kind of quality the scalers I ordered are, but I can give you the website if you want. I use the nupro supplement so there is a gravy with it. But she will probably love them plain. I am assuming she is between 65 and 75 lbs?? That would make her just about Madame Silkie's size. If nobody in my house ever died, you are all safe. Jake slobbers all over the place when he eats, Silkie takes each piece out of the bowl and puts in on the floor, rubs it around a little, then eats it. Scout and Gunnar are splashers..... I'm going to get a scaler, too (I've seen them here before), but that's going to take some time. Like I said, she's not a fan of having her mouth (or paws ) fooled with. Sean's at the store right now picking up a bag-o-wings! (I'm scared )!!!! Lynn, she's more like 60lbs - keeping her slim due to her hips. I'm hoping with the raw + the wellness core that I'm switching her to, I'll see a drastic improvement overall. I notice since she's here, she started getting eye goopies, her paws got rough, and she's gotten some hive-type things. I did it! Well, I didn't give her RMB's cuz hubby bought thighs instead of wings , so he cut the meat from the bone and we fed that to her. I put a dollop of yogurt in with it and she licked the bowl clean, and then licked it some more . I'm hoping it's enough (I just ordered the Switching to Raw book) - we gave her 2 thighs. They were pretty meaty . So, anyone else feeding raw, lookout! I'm going to be a major PIYA til my book arrives !!! Now, lets hope she just keeps it down.................
